I traded amps with a guy locally once years ago - My Mesa Road King Combo for his Diezel Einstein head. I drove 2-1/2 hours round trip to his house because he told me he recently had surgery and couldn't drive. I was only like 17 at the time, so my dad came along for the ride and we spent like an hour and a half there letting him play them both and just shooting the shit. I told him I was looking for a specific 4x12 to buy but I hadn't seen the model I wanted for sale.I‘ve done countless in person deals. Never packed and never felt the need to and never had an issue. I swear, there‘s gonna come a day when people will be too afraid to leave their home or even look another person in the eye.
About a week later, he emailed me and told me that the reverb wasn't working on the amp and that he wanted to trade back. I told him it was working when I left and it wasn't my fault it now wasn't working, so no, I wouldn't trade back. Then he called me nonstop for a few days and I just ignored him because he clearly broke it or was having trader's remorse and I'm not a guitar shop, no returns, buddy.
At this point, he stopped contacting me, so I assumed he had just given up and decided to keep it. I see the cab I wanted posted on CL in my city and I contact the guy. He said he lives close by and can deliver it because our truck is in the shop. Two hours later, that asshole shows up at my house. I open the door and he has a 9mm strapped to his waist and just says, "It's time to trade back." Of course, being a scared 17 year old at this point, I go get the amp and bring it down. This guy knew how old I was and he felt it necessary to bring a gun with him. Rather than make a scene and potentially get killed over it, I just gave it back and told him to get the fuck out.
I can't remember what the problem was with the reverb but I remember it was a super simple fix.
This guy ruined local deals for me and because of him I'd rather pay PayPal fees and take a cut out of the money for shipping than have to deal with people in person. It's been like 13 years and I'm still super weary about dealing with anyone anymore, so much so that I don't haggle with people at all, it's any price or nothing, tired of dealing with these people, people online are so much nicer and there's far less weirdos on the forums.
I get wanting to protect yourself when doing these local deals, but there's a time and a place for carrying but showing up to someone's house with a gun is neither of those. Don't put yourself in a sketchy situation and leave your gun in the car unless it looks weird when you roll up.
