For what it's worth, my mic preference from worst to best is sm57,e609,i5,421,and lastly Royer 121. I own all of these mic's and have tried them all in many varations. I'm only concerened with capturing high gain sounds, and the Royer does this better than the rest. I didn't want to spend $1300 on a mic, but when compared to what I've spent on other gear it's not out of line, and has been worth it. The dynamic mic's just sounded like the had different EQ curves, but didn't capture the sound of the amp. The Royer is the captures the actual sound in the room.

I am with the mic mixers. The 609 and 57 go well together, but if I had to pick one, it would be the 57. Maybe I am doing something wrong, but I haven't gotten anything spectacular with the 609 by itself.

i can't use the 609 by itself either....I like the I5 for live and for recording lately have been using a Beta 57 and I5....

I have an E609.

By itself, it has a lot of "presence" - it can make an amp sound grainy, with too much bite, and so on.

An Sm57, by comparison, can sound dark, with thick mids, and a heavy bottom

Together, they work VERY well with each other.

I picked one up from Guitar Center tonight. I like it a tad better than the 57 based on first impressions. Together they really work well so far. I am still trying to figure out the Trion 7000. Up close it is too muddy sounding, but is working well out from the cabinet for more of a room ambiance type of thing.

Same here. If I have to use only one mic for high gain guitar, it's a 57. I recorded all of Retrofitted with a 57/e609 combo.
