GO OUT AND ORDER THE DUNCAN SUPER V!!! IT IS AWESOME!! TO ME THE BEST PUP DUNCAN HAS EVER MADE!

The Super V is based on an old prototype of a JB. I guess the JB came down to a couple different prototypes, and Lynch liked the one that was not selected and used that as the basis for the Super V.

get the JB antiquity...
DITTO

I replaced a JB that was a bit mirophonic when you cranked it wide open with the Antiquity JB
MAN,that pickup growls in all the right places in my Hamer Sunburst Studio.

There is a shootout on YOUTUBE between all three versions of the JB.
One of the best videos I thought because you CAN hear a difference .

I would give the Antiquity a shot but I need trem spacing, zebra and short leg....I only see standard spacing with long leg for sale online.

Check out themusiczoo.com

If not in stock maybe they have a lead one one.

The Demartini was nothing special - certainly not worth 3x the cost of a JB.

Then you may have to get a regular JB and put a rough cast A5 mag in it.
It will be the same thing without the aging process and slightly degaussed magnet in it.
Or call MJ at S.D. and she will make you a Ant JB to your specs for about the same cost as a regular Ant PU .

My favourite way to tighten up the JB is put a Boss SD-1 in front like the good old days. Turns it into a laser beam.
I have the BKP Holydiver and while it's definitely more clear and tighter, it's emphasis is in the low mids and mid-mids, doesn't quite cut as well and you lose that untamed aggressiveness. Sounds great recorded though.

Just to add, and don't get me wrong, I love the JB, but it does date your sound a bit. It can do a wide variety of any style, but even in your progressive technical death metal band, your solos are still gonna sound like Livin' On A Prayer.

I haven't found a guitar I didn't enjoy a JB in. It's just "home" for me.
This ^ I have a JB in everything except for my 2 BC Riches, my Gunslinger has a stock DiMarzio SD in it and my Mockingbird has Rockfields which soon will be replaced with a sustainer and Super III's a la Def Leppard... But I always feel like something is off until I go back to my guitars with a JB. It's my little comfort zone!

Have you tried playing with the pickup height? If a slight tweak is all you need the height may be just enough.

The JB is my favorite pickup now. At first I didn't line it, but after messing with it awhile, they sound great to me.

Usually the Custom is a what you are describing. But like anything, pickups don't work the same in every guitar.

I don't agree with this at all but I give you props for making me laugh, that was well put.

Wasn't Rust in Peace recorded with JB's? Grinding and tight with a boost sharp in the highs. JB's low end were never a problem for me seeing as I like to boost Marshalls but it was the highs which could get a little sharp. I have to be honest, I didn't hear night and day differences between the 3 versions of the JB. If I were you, I'd try the Super V, you can make the Demartini pup by swaping the magnet for an A2. Found it a little soft for my tastes too.

Screw it I just called Duncan and ordered a custom JB...Lets see how it turns out, supposed to ship in a few weeks. It will have a rough cast Alnico 5 that comes in the Antiquity.

What did Duncan say the rough cast magnet would do for the JB exactly?

Hmm good question but I didnt ask that lol.....I told her (MJ) that I was recommend the rough cast magnet and she told me that all custom orders come with a rough cast magnet.

Maybe someone else can enlighten us what the tone difference is.

RC A5's sound more musical and sweeter without the annoying top end and the polished A5's to me sound thinner with more top end , some may call it ice pick highs.
I even like my RC A5's in my 59's better than the oem polished ones .
So imho it's well worth the up charge for the RC A5 magnet in any pickup they sell.

Wow. There's actually a noticeable difference between them. I liked the first one (35th anniversary). It was a little more raw and open. Subtle differences but that 35th sounded a little more alive.

35th anniversary sounded the best to my ears for whatever differences i could hear... that unfortunately is the one they didn't continue making. What was the cost difference? I might be in for one as well... i was A/B ing my aldrich vs AT-1 last night and now i find the AT-1 lacks a bit of the crunch i want on the lower strings. (great for high strings and leads though!) I am either going back to a JB or with another aldrich.
