Here's the rig in question...

As you can see, the left SLO is modded to the gills and the right one is bone stock. At certain gain and volume settings, these amps sound way different from each other. What I want to know is how to run this rig as if the preamp sections were separated from their respective power sections, and have the capability of choosing which channel gets heard. I remember reading in GP about how Knopfler did something similar with his dual SLO rig years ago, using the effects loops and possibly some internal mods. Now, the left SLO does have it's loop bypassed, but that can be remedied in about 5 minutes. I hope this makes sense. In essence, I'd like the rig as a whole to function like a 4 channel 200w SLO full stack.

Opions on how to gitt 'er done?

Easy: guitar -> A/B switch -> preamp of choice -> A/B/Y switch or splitter -> two poweramps and voilá...

For instance Lehle makes some very nice pedals to accomplish this but I'm sure there are others too.

Good luck !

Giga

Edit: if you'd go the midi-capable route with Lehle a third possibility would be to use both amp running together for a possibly even bigger tone :)

You're little "edit" comment , Giga, is what I want to accomplish. The power section of each head powers it's own cabinet continuously, and then I can switch between the 4 preamp channels.

Do a youtube search on the RJM RG 16 or the voodoo labs gcx...this is what you are after..an audio switcher with different loops that you route your amps into, and are able to recall different loops via midi..

I did this with a Diezel rig years ago. I had a VH4stereo and a Herbert. The Herberts power section was dry, and the VH4s was the stereo wet power section. & preamp channels.

I simply had an Axcess GRX4. Guitar in GRX. GRX4 Loop 1 send input to Herbert, Herbert loop send to return on loop 1 GRX4. GRX4 Loop 2 to input VH4, VH4 send to GRX4 loop 2 return. Depending with loop is on determines which amp gets signal and that is the amp that is your preamp.

Split with an Axess BS2 from the GRX4 out. I ran 1 split to the Herbert (dry) loop return. and split to an fx unit, fx unit to both returns on VH4s. 4x12 cab in the center, two 1x12 cabs on either side.

For you just use the splitter back to both loop returns on your SLOs. If you want fx, split into a line mixer and FX unit for parallel or just into an fx unit serial.

Pic of the rig. Yes I was in socks, lol and I played the Keys as well:

Are you looking for a rig with a midi footcontroller and a looper or do you want to keep it more simple ?

Playing evil metal diezels an being on stage in socks I find rather awkward :lol: :LOL:

Tone was so awesome, melted my shoes right off... :D

I use to run a two-amp (Mesa Heartbreaker and Trem-O-Verb) rig with one set of effects quite effectively. I had a small mixer with a pre fader aux send, which let me accomplish this (Samson MDR something?). I had an A/B box out front to select which amp to feed, then sent the effects loop sends to the mixer. Sent those signals to my pedalboard via the pre fade aux send, then went back into a channel on the mixer from the pedalboard, and fed the two power sections from the main L/R of the mixer. Worked like a charm, with very little excess noise. I'm sure there's some more elegant way to do that, but on my budget at the time, it worked.

i wouldnt fancy packing all that stuff up at 2am or on and off stage in 5min on a support show....bet it sounds good tho

I was just going to mention that must of sounded SUPER BAD ASS! :thumbsup:
I had both the Herbert and the VH4S but not at the same time. A blend of them two melted together would be sweeeeeeet! :D

Shark Diver, you nailed it, exactly what I want...

Guitar--->GRX4
GRX4 LP1 send--->SLO#1 input
SLO#1 fx send------>GRX LP1 return
GRX4 LP2 send--->SLO#2 input
SLO#2 fx send------>GRX4 LP2 return
(my little addition)
GRX4 LP3 send--->Egnater Loop Leveler
Egnater loop send--->pedals--->Egnater loop return
Egnater Loop Leveler--->GRX4 LP3 return
GRX4 LP4 send--->homemade rhythm volume cut box (25k pot)
25k---->GRX4 LP4 return (LP4 gives me solo volume when off)

GRX4 ouput--->split w/BS-2 or equivalent to both SLO fx returns

Look ok?

That looks cool. All the pedals are fx correct? The volume cut is cool. Dave Friedman made one of those for me in another rig and it worked great with the GRX4. If you don't own the GRX4 the RJM mini effects Gizmo is cool and has a 5th loop (maybe a pedal in front of the amps, or a volume pedal last after the preamps?). That' rig is going to rule. :rock:

Yeah, the pedals in the Eg loop will be 5 Maxon/Ibanez 9-series pedals: chorus, phaser, flanger, & 2 analog delays. Prior to the GRX4 main input will be an old Ibanez Bawler wah and a Maxon AutoFilter. The main question is...when the hell will I ever use this set-up? Answer: next spring at a local street fair, that will hopefully turn into more outdoor gigs.
