I think that would be very hard to do without using pedals to boost for more gain, but if you're stepping on OD pedals, not sure if that's functionally different than stepping on a switch to change channels.
That said, I for whatever reason tend to prefer either single-channel amps or just parking in one channel of an amp and using OD pedals, so what do I know.
The best amp at this, by far, that I've used is a raging Marshall Super Lead (into a Fryette Power Station so that I don't kill myself). Once it's really cranked up, there is a lot of overdrive, and a Tube Screamer and hotter pickups easily send it into what I can use for modern metal. But click off the boost pedal and roll back the volume knob, and everything cleans up amazingly well.
