I had heard that he is demoing a possible new amp for marshall? I hope so... they are already making the jcm 800 chassis and 1959slp models why not just mod those with the 34 or whatever and they would sell the shit out of them... plus the build quality wouldn't be shitty anymore. Whoever is running things at marshall now does not listen to the street, at least not in this country. They would have seen how many friedmans, suhrs, bogners etc are being sold!
Those three companies combined don't see a tenth of the sales Marshall sees.

That's right ... but they could see their tenth too!

A good rule of thumb is that any player that has a sig amp generally does not get their iconic tone from said amp. It's a chicken and an egg problem. Person with tons of talent takes a good piece of gear makes some classic music with it, wannabes want "that" sound, after several records, tours, negotiations, manufacturing details, etc, etc, the hype machine starts pumping out sig gear that is essentially trying to get the tone of a hand selected or modified version of something that already exists in the wild; if the artist uses it their tone changes, if they don't use it people feel ripped, it's lose/lose much of the time.

At least Eddie used the 5150 but anyone buying one hoping for instant brown sound was bummed. How many signature amps did Dimebag have? I lost count... Dimebag tone still == a correct era Randall RG100ES and an EQ.

This much i know and understand. I just thought the tone on the sekf titled solo album and the album with Myles was awesome. So i wanted thay sound for when i play those songs. I mean, i dont wanna be a slash clone by any means, but since hes not using them anymore, i have no desire for the amp.snd i have one lined up with a great deal on a NOS AFD100. But i think ill just get a Plexi 1987x or a pink taco instead. And push it with a Keeley TS9 baked mod.

His tone has pretty much always been based around an 800 anyway, maybe his AFD 100 was great for getting that Appetite tone, but maybe it just wasn't working live. If you watch the Tokyo Dome vids, especially his solo spot, the tone is a lot thicker than his tone on Appetite/UYI records imo and I guess that's what he's used to hearing live. Plus, I guess he's still using Marshalls, that won't ever change!

TLDR; he seems to prefer a "smaller sound" to sit in with the mix on albums, but a beefier tone live.

+1

I'll never understand why so many manufacturer make better Marshall than Marshall. I don't believe they don't know how to do it.

Oh I think Marshall or whoever runs it these days is more concerned about profit, hence the crappy built quality & cost cutting that goes into their amps.
Building amps in the sheer volume they do, it would be impossible to make them the same way as smaller builders...Suhr, Friedman Bogner, Germino etc.

Just a sad reality

I love the fact that he still uses a DD-3 rather than the thousand dollar delay units he could be using.

What is the deal with that little black cry baby pedal. Is that used to shape the tone on songs like Sweet Child Oh Mine to make the neck pup cut? I'm always interested in that pedal and i didn't find much on it on the dunlop site. Is it no longer in production?

As for Marshall not knowing how to do things right and not following the trends set by Friedman, Cameron etc... they already have. Their answer to all that was the DSL and by the looks of it, it is still popular for a reason. That amp sounds great.

I love the DD-3. Perfect set it and forget it delay.

Mmmmm....the Keeley Baked TS9. My favorite TS. I always have a couple.
Perfect lead tone on top of mid gain crunch. Doesn't get better.

Like Elric said, this is true of all "sig" gear IMO. I always shake my head when we people are posting about sig stuff like boutique pickups. Take any of those guys and I'll guarantee they were using pretty "normal" gear for their classic recordings. Tried and true stuff just works. Like all the guys that used Duncan JBs for their iconic tones now having various sig pickups etc. Just get a JB! lol. Same with strings, every time I buy regular Ernie Balls they try to get me to buy the more expensive cobalt versions, but I just don't see the point. Do they sound different? Sure, better? Subjective... and which of my favorite records are they on? Oh yeah zero. Ok...

Slash is a perfect example of a guy who has used essentially a LP and Marshall for his entire career. If you can actually play, a good LP and 800 will do it for you zero problems. Why complicate it more if that's what you're after? I love my bogner rig and guitars etc. but if I had to rebuy all that stuff right now? I probably couldn't afford it, simple as that. If I had to streamline things down to what I'd *need* it'd probably come down to very basic stuff. LP/Strat/Tele/Acoustic and an 800 and (and maybe a Fender combo) and some pedals would cover everything. Yes, even metal. And frankly I may need to do some downsizing for financial reasons in the next year and off some gear, we'll see.

I always tough this signature rig thing was funny and business only! Correct me if I'm wrong but as I can remember Vai, Van Halen and Kerry king are the only 3 that comes to my mind that they used only the signature stock they are paid for!

Thought so.

But yes, this whole signature / endorsement BS has to stop. So many bands endorse so many things and don't use the gear live or in the studio. I get the need for a payday but do they feel the least bit conflicted when players that idolize them buy this signature / endorsed gear because of the idolization and aren't getting the real deal? We all know that there's a ton of impressionable and not researched players out there. Hell when I was 15, was I looking for what gear guys were really using behind the scenes live? Hell no, I was looking at pictures of those guys in guitar magazines standing beside amps, pedals, guitars etc.

Its even worse in the supplement industry... younger guys thinking you can maintain 6 percent body fat and have 21 inch arms with striations using protein powder and creatine!

I laughed when I watched a Rich Piana video where he was talking about how supplements won't replace 'REAL FOOD', and how much he stressed 'REAL FOOD'. Then towards the end starts talking about his new powder line.

Lol.... one thing I will say about Rich is that he is honest, at least, about what he uses and how he trains... while a lot of the "natty" guys are not

My buddy rented the amps he owns to Slash for the latest album.
Not a single JCM 800 in the bunch.

So what amps were rented out?

I think Slash would have all the Marshalls he needs for an album. On the latest one he was tracking with a classic Marshall tone one side and something different on the other to mix it up a bit.
