I need to get a good, all around vocal mic, nothing to fancy. Basically will be used for backup vocals and yelling at the crowd once in a while. SM58 a good choice or is there something else I should be looking at?

That is what I would get.

Thanks man! I am getting tired of showing up to gigs and having to sing thru something that smells like it, well you know...

Yes ... perfect choice ...

Industry standard, can't go wrong. I have a cheap Behringer 58 copy that does the trick well, never had any complaints by sound technicians.

58 or 57, same guts, and if you have the 57, you can use it for recording cabs as well ;)

U2's FOH guy uses 58's on the edges combos.

it has a slight dip in the low end.

I personally think Sennheiser mics sound better for vocals then 58s.
like an 845 or 945 great mics!

58s work to tho!

A SM58 is a good safe choice. I have a couple of them. I prefer my EV N/D 457 and 967 mics, but the SM58's should work for what you want. As mentioned the SM57's are pretty similar, so you might want to go with one of those....

Bingo. I have both and I actually like the 57 better for vocals and mic'ing speakers.

+1 - I got about 5 of these and they sound great.

For backing vocals, a 58 will do just fine.

For lead vocals, I don't go ANYWHERE without my Beta58 now. It's my secret weapon.

I never even considered a 57, I figured that was for instrument mic'ing only. Hmmmm....

as the shure site says, the 57 has been a staple on the presidential podium for a long time. ;)
put a wind screen on it for plosives, and you have a great vocal mic
