Hey guys, I'm Ron, the guy who bought the amp from Steve. I post pretty regularly here but didn't catch this thread until now.

I sincerely hope I haven't given anyone the impression that I'm the sort who would falsify damage like this. That honestly kills me, especially coming from Mark of whom I've been a huge fan of for years now from time over at the Metro forum.

Anyway, the damage is for sure from drop shock inside the headshell as the chassis buckled UP from the weight of the trannys - meaning it was flipped onto its back. This also accounts for the EL34 being smashed as it was jammed into the transformer.

I can't think of a way to drop this thing outside of the headshell, deforming the chassis in the process, while still maintaining the integrity of the mounting points.

The amp is special, and I bought it for sentimental reasons...I owned a real '68 not far from 12301. I sold it in '90 while supporting my record and have always regretted that.

Again, I am sorry I might have given anyone the idea I would fake damage to this amp. It is against everything I believe and stand for.

Sincerely,
Ron
Ron - you don't have to defend yourself man - several of us have already been doing that in the thread for you already...

Steve

I saw that...thank you!

And that is assuming that they even care in the first place. I like the thought of competition... a hit to the bottom line is about the only thing that would wake these big couriers up and force them to "care".

What a nice amp, really sorry to see it broken like that :(

Holy crap that must have taken a hell of a knock to bend the chassis so far. Jeez....

What I am thinking, that amp had some velocity behind it to create that mess  They need more indoor video cameras imo to catch this crap.

Sorry about the amp Steve.

so what happens to the amp now?

it works but is damaged...does someone pay to have it repaired?

UPS better pay to have it repaired. They destroyed it, it was very well packed in the original packaging materials + more and it was insured by them for the full purchase amount...

I have had several friends that have worked at UPS .... They told me it is common for boxes to be throw off a 20 foot high pile onto cement.

But WHY is it common? WTF is management doing? They think this is acceptable?!

I bet UPS would save a ton of money in annual insurance premiums (I can't say for sure, but it is likely that UPS cedes its insurance risk to a reinsurer, as UPS' core business expertise is not underwriting insurance) if they had their people move these parcels properly - even if it meant hiring some additional workers and extending estimated shipping times by a few hours.

It just doesn't make sense.

here's what they did to a brand new laney 4X12 that i traded on here. boxed, little bubble wrap, fiberboard on top and bottom, encased in 1/2" foam board.

they also refused to honor the insurance and charged my local shipoint over a 100 in return shipping. funny thing is, they never shipped it back. i let dude keep it and the 2 good v30's as a goodwill gesture.

Absolutely detest UPS... not saying FedEx is perfect, but it seems the vast majority of shipping horror stories come from UPS... hate them...

Mojo sent man, hopefully everything works out...

Yes they do ... they are worried about moving bulk & do not worry if a few get damaged on the way. Around the holidays & other volume periods it happens even more as they try to keep up. There is no reason to think your packages are being moved around with care with the volume they move.
Personally I have lost a few tubes in about half the ones shipped to & from me over the years. Regardless of how packed. I expect nothing less.
All boxes are treated the same ... the value, what it is, etc is not something the people doing the job worry about. Sad but true according to the people I have known.

Amen to that!!

I'd better hear something tomorrow from them.

I recently purchased a used TC G Major from a buddy's store in Manchester, NH. I've bought tons of stuff through him and I know the guy packs as though he's waiting for the apocalypse. Here's the fun part:

After much anticipation it had arrived. It was to learn that when I opened the box, some gorilla at UPS not only managed to smash both parameter wheels clean off but the rack ear as well. I fixed it with left over super glue that I did a couple of inlay change outs with but couldn't believe it. Now I'm about to Sh** a brick as I send my amp out to Dave Friedman tomorrow wondering if it could look like Ron's. Last time I'll ever use UPS. Last time I had a head shipped to me through UPS was in HS and right before 5 P.M the guy arrives, asks me to help him with my amp and decides to drop it right at my feet. There went the two power tubes. Should've known then.

Funny thing to is, before I signed in tonight, I just watched Ron's video and though, damn that sounds great! And that thing looks like it hasn't had one scratch ever placed on it!

Late in on this but very sorry to hear that the amp was damaged, the clip of it sounds great too... Highly disappointing that it was damaged by the shipping company.

Could it have been re-boxed by UPS?
