Not really a fan, only heard a handful of songs. But the thought of seeing them play in a small venue (400-500 people max) and to hear a Friedman Butterslax (my favorite amp) cranked up being used and abused live was what sold me into going lol...

I got to say, not seeing a Butterslax on stage was a let down lol. As for Mastodon, I now get them. I couldn't get into them listening to them thru headphones at work but seeing them live, switching off on vocals the way they do and just feeling them play from their hearts was a pretty cool experience. ... but still why have a signature amp and not use it.. fak

Nice!! I was never into them really either. Heard some of there stuff on sirrius/xm but not really my thing. I went to Mayhem one year and they were there, and I was quite impressed with them live, they put on a good show! Same with Slipnot, Five Finger DP, and Rob Zombie. Never really liked their stuff, heard em a ton on the radio, but saw them live and they are each amazing stage acts and incredibly tight live. Still wouldn't listen to them at home though.....hahahahah!

Yeah dude, they were totally tight and I really liked the bass player's voice. But I agree probably won't be listening to them at home anytime soon lol.

I gave them a shot at one point but not really into it. Just seems like sludgy muddy metal. Kind of get the feeling of wading through a swamp when I hear their stuff. They're also kind of intense people haha. I met them on a photoshoot years ago and they legit scared me. But I started talking gear with them and they loosened up a bit.

I first saw them in 2007 when they just got signed to Warner, met all of them and they seemed nice especially Brann and Brent.

Re: not playing live with Butterslax. The core Mastodon sound was always dirtboxes into stock Marshalls, it's easier to hire a few Marshall wherever they play than lugging their own amps around.

Yeah, my first thought was that it was a rented backline. Just a guess, though. They were never really my thing, either, although I thought a couple of their songs weren't too bad.

I like Mastodon, but I think they are a bit of an acquired taste. I'd be disappointed if I didn't hear the Slax live, but it sounds like it was a cool show!

Yeah it was a cool show. Not too many acts come thru Honolulu so one can't be too picky if they want to see live bands. I'm surprised they came back to Hawaii. The venue is about the half the size of an average high school gym in the mainland. So its a very up close and personal experience.

I bet that it was a good show. I much prefer smaller venues like that because it is a much more personal experience.

Love Mastodon. And yeah, I'm quite certain that's a rented backline. As big as Mastodon is, they're not a radio band and my guess is they're really not rich by any stretch.

Mastodon is the rare band that got me on the first listen. Oblivion, the first track from Crack the Skye.

Saw them live in 2011 and they were not very good. Saw them again this past June and they were incredible.

Saw mastodon twice in the past year, both times Bill used the butterslax and almost never left ch3, he also cut way more than Brent did.

Edit: Forgot to mention i've seen interviews that they state they use rental gear when they leave the continental usa so maybe that's why?

That Backline gear for sure.. not there’s.. he uses the amp.

Love 'em or hate 'em, you gotta respect the Motherload video. So many big asses shakin'.

I have tried to like them, but I just can't. Maybe they are different live. Some bands are really good live but can't re-create the magic in the studio.

Good lort! The arse shakin' is simply hilarious.

That video is pretty crazy. I can think of a few ways to interpret what they meant with it, but it’s actually kind of thought provoking.

They keep a backline in storage for europe and mainland states, if it was outside of those areas it was probably all rental stuff and there you do the best you can. A Marshall got them by for years so it's the obvious go to if a a slax isnt available.

Yeah Bill has actually been running Helix direct for some time now. Before that it was Fractal. Both get a mix of Friedman for stage volume I believe but he's definitely been gigging Helix for a while now.

I dig em. I like the way they all do vocals, and do them very well. (well except bill does not do vocals).

I had to warm up to them over the years.
