So, My Next Gig...

This might end up in the OTC, but we'll see.

My next gig coming up is in the Highland Square district of Akron, Ohio in a month (almost exactly). On the 7th, there was a shooting in front of that club in the street. The community is reeling, and the suspects are still at large. Meanwhile, the bars are self-imposing a midnight curfew, and the two public parking lots have an 11 pm curfew. There is an increased police presence on the street, and it seems the neighborhood isn't the thriving art district it was a few weeks ago.

The bar we're playing is right in between the parking lots in question where the shooting happened. How do I promote this show? Worse yet, it's us as an opener, a local that put the show together, and a touring act. We're there to bring support to get the touring act paid. How can we be of help if the community is sketched out?

I guess I gotta call the promoter in a little bit...

I would probably start with updating the flyer to something less murderous looking. I read up and it looks like they're trying to limit the late night loitering / partying in the parking lots to help curb the stupidity. Hopefully that works and the crowds return. I hope they catch the dickheads who brought their guns to the "party". Never once in all my years have I thought, "hey, I better take my gun with me while I'm out drinking tonight". People are so f***** dumb.

I completely trust myself with a gun while drinking. Why? Because it stays in the holster the entire time and nobody even knows I have it. I'm not an idiot.

We play in an area that has had some shootings and one of my buddies won't come to our gigs if we play downtown. Seems like there is this resurgence of teen violence that went away for years and is back.

Overkill. Not much chance of someone getting into a bar unnoticed with a long gun or anything that moves a bullet over 1200 FPS. Level 3A soft armor is sufficient. I think I paid $300 for the last vest I bought. Hotter than a mother fucker though.

I rarely drink these days and never to excess. Nevertheless, based on days gone by I absolutely trust myself with a gun at any time.

I very seriously doubt the incident(s) in this post are the result of normally responsible people who decided to have a shoot out because they were drunk.

I have some spartan level iii hard plates. Any time I wanna know what it feels like to be 25lbs overweight I toss it on and go for a 3 mile run.

Having worked tourism for quite a few years in Florida both me and my boss agreed that the craziest mf'ers that show up down there are from OH first and foremost, with MI a close 2nd with NJ rounding out the top 3. The loss of manufacturing in the rust belt and resulting loss of homes, destroyed families, dreams, and end game cultural instability has created a real shit show up there IMO. Sad but damn every time there was a problem tourist I could be assured they were from one of those three places and if they weren't then they were from Assachusetts.

I was surprised as that area isn't usually considered sketchy- unless that's recently changed.

It's been getting bad for a while, but this just pushed the community over the edge. There was a venue there called Annabelle's that we played a bunch that closed a few years back. Since then, I haven't been over there. This place we're playing is the new crust punk hangout in the area. That scene is fine.

It's the area around it that is falling victim to "teen" takeovers.

Same thing happened to St. Louis. There used to be some cool areas downtown that were a blast to hang out in. Laclede's Landing, Soulard, Washington Ave, etc. Now you can't pay me go down there even in the daytime.
