So what is the Rigtalk view of PCB vs PTP

actually, if its tube buffered, you can change the tube to a jan/phillips or a 12au7 to color the overall tone of the effects... :)

I prefer my Rig Talk to be PCB. The PTP version has too much sag IMO

All the amps I really dig seem to be non pcb except the 5150 and UL.

For the owner, perception = reality.

I have found that I care less for whether or not the amp is PTP or PCB. I DO care about humidity and voltage. For me, makes all of the difference in tone.

As long as the amp isn't made from broken blender parts from a Malaysian scrap yard like the JVM, then PCB is good enough.

So, is TAG going to take the Pepsi challenge that John Suhr offered to put up?

Mine is over 2 years old and has been at jams at gig levels over 50 times and still going strong and 3 years left on the warrenty

I love Tag but he is nuts if he can tell the difference

50 times? Pics or it never happened.

They are just Sunday jams with two other 40 somethings in the drummers basement or garage, no pics of that :aww: I think the other guitarist has some edirol recordings.

I also find it funny when some guys shell out 5k for an amp that's PTP only to boost it with a solid state pedal. Don't get me wrong, i love stomp boxes, but it shoots to shit their theory of keeping their "Holier Than Thou" signal chain cleaner than a virgins you know what.

The Plexi Palace loves it when you say that

I chalk it all up to too much money, too much time, and too much to think about.

PCBs offer the greatest possibility of amps being consistent, i.e. two amps sounding the same. obviously, component values are going to vary, but the interelement capacitances will at least be the same. with a turret/eyelet built amp, it's near impossible to maintain that level of consistency.

true PTP is even worse.

that's my $.02 on the matter.

Listen with the ears not the eyes.

I have a bit of a nostalgia thing for PTP, but that's about it.

O.K., now I'm confused. I don't remember whether I have a PCB or PTP sprinkler system. I just tried listening and still couldn't tell.

Mike Soldano says there's no difference if it's done right...

The article covers a few pros and cons: Point to Point vs Printed Circuit Boards is there, just scroll down a bit.

http://www.soldano.com/mharticle.htm#Class A vs Class A/B

So there's no point in me digging up my front yard?

Well...if it was done right you shouldn't hear a difference. Make sure you listen to it first thing in the morining or better yet, very late at night so as not to hear all the morning birds cluttering up the sound spectrum. I'd bet it's ok

Will it change the sound if my 9 volt backup battery in my sprinkler timer is old?

Amps - shmamps. Who cares. Although I am a ptp snob when it comes to my vibrating buttplugs.

Can you explain why ptp would be less consistant then PCB? Interelement capacitances?

I have some of each that sound great, but I would rather not see tube sockets, pots and jacks going directly to the board cause I would rather not solder on it if I dont have to (as Brian said)
