So why do people put Vai and Satch in the same league?

You forgot to add IMO. Im surprised that you even found the time to see this thread. Shouldnt you be off somewhere giving Mayers Yambag a tongue bath right about now?

Ah, so controversial posts still wind you up, eh Kage?

FWIW, my post was mostly tongue in cheek. I grew up a fan of both but I can't say that any of their music is particularly moving on anything other than a "wow, check that technique" kinda level.

And yes, this is indeed my opinion.

...I dunno. Comes off more like trolling to me...

I'll tell you what Vai and Satch have in common. When they did G3 with Yngwie they were reduced to JR High School Prom Band players.
Only because they were playing something different than the same 4 licks over and over infinitely.

We much have watched 2 different shows. Satch and Vai, thrown into a situation that called for improvisation, wound up holding their dicks.

Same as when Neal Schon sat in on the G3 encores and smoked both. Satch and Vai are great at writing tunes that showcase their licks and tricks. That gets tiring real quick. Thrown into real world jamming, they both fold like a cheap suit.

Haha...Schon's in a different league when it comes to improvision. Saw him in Atlanta at namm in 89 in a blues club. He and Vinnie Moore both sat in with the band. Neal completely smoked him. Not even close.

They're in the same league cuz they're both masters of the guitar, and will equally clear the room when they start singing.

For me, Vai is a role model as far as "being at one" with the guitar. Seems like he can bring out whatever he wants to and look cool while doing it.

Having said that, I have a hard time listening to a full album of his straight. I can listen to his ballads all day long (Whispering A Prayer, Lotus Feet, For The Love Of God) but his angular stuff can really challenge my ear. He's been the first to admit in many interviews that he knows his music is weird and that he really appreciates that he continues to have an audience for it.
I appreciate that it's the music he hears in his head, and that he is able to get it out through his masterful technique and dedication to the instrument.

I am not much of a fan of either, but speaking of Awful music...didn't you post a thread on Justin Timberlake the other day?

Seems like someone was castrated at birth.

vai to me is un-listenable its like zappa, satch not much better..Im over the whole instrumental guitarist thing..its boring

I used to be a Vai guy. I thought his art, showmanship, and performance was better. I thought Vai's tone and ability to push the envelope with the guitar were better than Satch. I thought Satch had the chops, but there was always something in his tone that I just thought sounded kinda thin. Every time I saw them both on tour both solo and with the G3 stuff, I always gave the title to Vai.

Then I saw Satch play live with Chickenfoot...

Blew me away...so I thought I had him just at an "on" night...so I went and saw Chickenfoot again at Rocklahoma.

Now I'm much bigger into Satch than Vai.

Shouldn't you be off running through the halls of your high school screaming at the top of your lungs...........with Justin Timberlake? :emofag: :grim:

LOL!!! It would take so much more than what you bring to the table to wind me up Adam. First off, I dont see anything of controversy in any of your "controversial" posts. Theyre so blatantly contrived that they couldnt be controversial, youre trying too hard and its obvious.

As I am no longer a big listener of either Vai or Satch anymore, speaking objectively, Vai is widely revered for his compositional skills and very unique voice and style. His chops are a secondary consideration compared to the afformentioned attributes. As for Satch, I dont know anybody that listens to him and likes him based off his chops... It doesnt move me anymore than it does you these days but that doesnt make it shitty...

well duh!!!

They're both smoking players, as is Yngwie. None of them make the other look like children... I'm repeatedly baffled at how personal taste and the concept of subjectivity is lost on those of us who participate in artistic pursuits. <burp>

He may be the father of instrumental guitar rock. .

IMHO this title belongs to Jeff Beck! Blow by Blow was released in 1974 and reached #4 on the charts! Pretty amazing for an instrumental guitar album!

For shear technique and originality, Vai by a mile imo.

I find Vai far less pleasurable to listen to, but I'll admit he's the more technically accomplished guitarist. I'd rather listen to a Satch album, though!

-C

Same goes with me
Count me in this group. I own 3 Satriani CD's.....zero of Vai.
Dont mean I dont like Vai. But to listen to songs....Satriani for me takes it.
Just my stinking opinion.

Final comment. I find Satch much easier to listen to (overall). Vai is one of the most entertaining players to watch perform. One of a select group looks completely one with a guitar in his hands. It just looks like it is an extra appendage.

I remember how great Ry Cooder played in Crossroads. I like that playing better. The opening slide part was stellar.

But blue is clearly superior to apple.

So I gotta ask, was this thread about the league that the two aforementioned gentlemen share, or is it about who's better

Semantics and logistics, just axin', juuuuuust axin'....
