So why do people put Vai and Satch in the same league?

He may be the father of instrumental guitar rock. .

IMHO this title belongs to Jeff Beck! Blow by Blow was released in 1974 and reached #4 on the charts! Pretty amazing for an instrumental guitar album!

For shear technique and originality, Vai by a mile imo.
Agreed on Jeff Beck.

So I gotta ask, was this thread about the league that the two aforementioned gentlemen share, or is it about who's better

Yes, maybe.

Frankly, who gives a shit. Both write pretty awful music!

I am not much of a fan of either, but speaking of Awful music...didn't you post a thread on Justin Timberlake the other day?

Yup, I did. If you check the thread however, whilst I do think those two albums have some good tunes, I was actually talking about the band.

Ah, so controversial posts still wind you up, eh Kage?

LOL!!! It would take so much more than what you bring to the table to wind me up Adam. First off, I dont see anything of controversy in any of your "controversial" posts. Theyre so blatantly contrived that they couldnt be controversial, youre trying too hard and its obvious.

FWIW, my post was mostly tongue in cheek. I grew up a fan of both but I can't say that any of their music is particularly moving on anything other than a "wow, check that technique" kinda level.

As I am no longer a big listener of either Vai or Satch anymore, speaking objectively, Vai is widely revered for his compositional skills and very unique voice and style. His chops are a secondary consideration compared to the afformentioned attributes. As for Satch, I dont know anybody that listens to him and likes him based off his chops... It doesnt move me anymore than it does you these days but that doesnt make it shitty...

And yes, this is indeed my opinion.

well duh!!!

Right.

Right, and even before that you have instrumental tracks on all four of the Jeff Beck Group albums as well. What's interesting is that Eric Johnson was doing the same type of fusion material on both Electromagnets albums which were released in the same years as "Blow by Blow" and "Wired"

vai to me is un-listenable its like zappa, satch not much better..

I've read plenty of foolishness over the years
and this is right up there in the Top 5!!
Opinion is Opinion but the path that these
3 have paved for the World of guitar, is
Unquestionable.
The Level of Mastery the 3 above have achieved
is undeniable!!

This guy was my hero in high school in the 80's, years before I'd even heard of Satch or Vai:

all these guys were fiery when they were young coming out the gates swinging
connected to satch way easier. vai was flashy but i never had any desrie to learn his songs or solos. so much gimmick.

but rock guitar heroics is a fleeting idiom all about confidence and youthful energy that bands like the stones and pink floyd could sustain cause their music is pretty mellow

vh can still throw down through the ups and downs because ed and al always were solid musicians first

holdsworth is still insane as a player but looks like an inebriated condor and gambale blazes sweeps better than ever but is part frodo on opium wearing elvira's wig, part australian gay porn stylist in appearance.

schenker and lynch went by the way of the gloved dodo for a spell but both seem back in fighting form

but all in all hard to be arrogant sexy cool take the world by the throat do or die rock star guy when you're old rich fat unpracticed or totally lazy and full of yourself

Vai and Satch are completely two different guitar players. I enjoy both of their playing though, but I lean more towards Vai. I have seen both in my life (Vai much more than Satch) and they both kicked ass live.

Vinnie Moore had cooler hair that either Vai or Satch.
