Hi guys,
me and my buddy had little amp testing yesterday. He has SLO30 and he is intrested in SLO100 which I have.
There was a lot of threads about new SLO's so no need to introduction. The preamp section is identical and all the differences happens in power section. 100 is big, tight and kicking like a mule, this is SLO sound. The 30 sound more compressed, still big but more rounded bottom end. It was more forgiving and easier to play than 100. Differences were in the taper of MV knob too, 100watter has gradual taper opossite to 30, were everything happen between 1-5. I played older (around 2010) SLO and like it slightly more than new one, little sweeter or bloom-ier. But I'm not sure if I can swap it for great switchable effect loop of the SLO II. Both amp are amazing and even small 30 delivers goods.
Few observation we make and what are not so much mentioned on forums are 1)crunch channel with gain dimmed is on par with older plexi dynamic wise and JCM800 gain wise. It worth to sacrifice clean channel and ride with volume knob for clean sounds. 2)there is no need for boost for rhytm playing on OD channel if You can push power section a little and don't push preamp gain too far ( 5-6 max). Tight right hand is a must.
The cab we use is my trusty Bogner with 65W Scumbacks (J75 top/ H75 bottom), occasional boosting with Decibelics Golden Horse (what a Klon!!!). Guitars were Gibson Heritage 80 for vintage tones, PRS DiMeola for slightly modern LP tone, EBMM Luke with EMG's and Floyd for big rack 80's and Ibanez PIA for allrounder (damned Ibanez need to make more alder RGs).
The other amps were Bogner 3534 and Naylor Duel 60.
Mini XTC is 'usual' gig player's heaven, fat and big cleans, the Bogner signature crunch on channel 2 and modern voiced CH3 usable for rhythm and lead. Preamp-wise is mini better than 101B but cannot compare power sections. But I don't say 35w is not enough, personally it is ok for 90% of gigs I play. Volume taper is great too and You got maximum headroom around 3-4 o'oclock !!! (This was the same with Helios 100, in was on par with Wizard MCII100 volume wise but You don't be shy to turn that fuc*n MV knob up)
The last but not least is my Naylor Duel 60...compared to previous amps it just scream boutique. It has feeling of PTP amp, handwired Blue XTC channel with more gain, just imagine
Touch of Dumble in leads for, bit of JCM800 in rhythm playing and add a hair of SLO'a bloom and voila...Naylor. But I have to mod my clean channel, because it breaks up too early due sharing master volume with dirty channel. Now it is perfect chimy clean channel on par with pedal platform clean amps. Few tips if You playing first time...dime the presence knob at least to 3 o'clock. And if You missing the Marshall upper mid bite, add 4dB boost at 1kHz before preamp...
