Makes no difference. Nobody was in the amp in 1978-1982. Anything else contrary to that time period means nothing. There is a picture where you can clearly see a pot sticking out of the back when they are in the studio...

A good source tole me that they feel the amp had a Jose master with zeners across it to get that saturation at lower volumes. As those diodes changed over time (over time getting whacked with voltage and losing saturation factors) the amp got cleaner, just like his albums gain got cleaner.

Damn, it is not JUST the amp, lots of amps get THAT tone. It is EDDIE, he made it sound like it did.

PERIOD

Fuck

The ever returning subject.

I love it.........

Even if an independant tech shot a vid taking apart Ed's Marshall piece-by-piece and explaining everything in intricate detail.... we would STILL argue about whether it was modded or not

More proof IMO is that SNL spot where he is playing with GE Smith and friends, and has plenty of gain with no pedals...and no chance that its cranked. No attenuator in sight. Hmmm....? That was from 83 I think...

I never understood the infatuation with EVHs tone anyway. Plenty of people have gotten that tone just fine, and I know this is a real shocker here, but they're mostly great players.

Lots of people think there was some mythical mods done, but amp modders and builders have been over that circuit ad nauseum and I doubt there's anything that hasnt been experimented with.

I think with EVH, a Jose master gets you in the ballpark and then If you can nail the feel (which is the hard part) then you're going to get there, or be so close most people can't tell the difference.

I totally agree. I just never got it. I never found anything magical or special about his guitar tone, other than the fact that he was an extremely skilled guitarist. If he would have used a Laney amp instead of a Marshall...he still would have been a legend, Van Halen still would have gotten huge, and old Laney's would probably be worth a lot more money.

I want to hear and see Ed playing the Marshall today. Old guitar new guitars just to see if it's still there!

I agree that it was probably a Jose master. I think the argument that it was 'stock' just doesn't hold water...no matter what amp guru looked at/serviced it, it was YEARS after the first few albums were recorded. And yes, there are many amps that can get that tone these days. At the time though, no one had ever heard guitar played that way with that type of tone. Groundbreaking and epic. So yes, we get bored and bring it up for the 10000th time. Lol.

I'm only interested in knowing what the mod was so I know to never do it to any of my amps. :D

That tone was never anything special.

This 100%!! and a incredible engineer and producer!

Call me crazy, but I find the tone on each of the first six VH albums very different. I love them all, but VHI is my least favorite. IMHO, Don Landee had as much to do with this as Ed did. The tone sure went south on 5150 and OU812. But it was pretty darn good before that.

He did play through Laney's around mid 1978 when his gear got lost coming back from Japan.

EVH said he still basically sounding the same through the Laney's.

----

Guitar.com: What do you have now?

EVH: What I basically have is three different setups, three complete setups. I have three 100-watt tops of whatever make right now I'm using Music Man, a couple of Laney amps, which are English, and a couple of new Marshalls. I'm just using everything right now because I lost those old amps. But I use three 100-watt amps for the main set what I call it and then I do my guitar solo, and after that I change guitars and amps to setup number two. Setup number three is also again three amps, for backup.

---

Then I lost them somewhere on an airplane, never got them back. And I started using Music Mans. I used Laneys. I used just about everything, and they all pretty much sounded the same, just because I play the same.

EVH is a lying, sue happy shill, he was the king of tone back in the day, now he sounds like a jar of bees.

Makes you wonder why is Ed not telling the truth about amps he used forty years ago ? Obviously a conspiracy since so many people have confirmed what he has said.
