More proof IMO is that SNL spot where he is playing with GE Smith and friends, and has plenty of gain with no pedals...and no chance that its cranked. No attenuator in sight. Hmmm....? That was from 83 I think...psychodave":10tmd4h9 said:Makes no difference. Nobody was in the amp in 1978-1982. Anything else contrary to that time period means nothing. There is a picture where you can clearly see a pot sticking out of the back when they are in the studio...
A good source tole me that they feel the amp had a Jose master with zeners across it to get that saturation at lower volumes. As those diodes changed over time (over time getting whacked with voltage and losing saturation factors) the amp got cleaner, just like his albums gain got cleaner.

I agree that it was probably a Jose master. I think the argument that it was 'stock' just doesn't hold water...no matter what amp guru looked at/serviced it, it was YEARS after the first few albums were recorded. And yes, there are many amps that can get that tone these days. At the time though, no one had ever heard guitar played that way with that type of tone. Groundbreaking and epic. So yes, we get bored and bring it up for the 10000th time. Lol.Motorpud":1ufmuc5k said:I never understood the infatuation with EVHs tone anyway. Lots of people think there was some mythical mods done, but amp modders and builders have been over that circuit ad nauseum and I doubt there's anything that hasnt been experimented with.
I think with EVH, a Jose master gets you in the ballpark and then If you can nail the feel (which is the hard part) then you're going to get there, or be so close most people can't tell the difference.

I totally agree. I just never got it. I never found anything magical or special about his guitar tone, other than the fact that he was an extremely skilled guitarist. If he would have used a Laney amp instead of a Marshall...he still would have been a legend, Van Halen still would have gotten huge, and old Laney's would probably be worth a lot more money.
