Haha that was a great read, especially the contradicting statements e.g. "a minor part....that I will keep to myself" etc.. :) thanks.

If something is so minor and supposedly mostly unrelated to creating the tone, then why keep it secret?
And it's just gear ferrkrissakes! It's nothing until how you play it!

I know the guy posting that is Mr. Suhr but come on...

This is not the 1980's anymore when people had "secret settings" or a "secret rack piece" or "secret guitar techniques" when everything is available on the internet now for free including schematics and gut shots of just about every amp/mod ever made.

That is why in my post above I said as soon as I read that part about "never mind the minor detail that I will omit from our model we sell you" I just "disregard" the entire post. It's like those amp vendors that do their version of a Jose mod but refuse to do a exact copy of the Jose mod even if you request them to do it.

If I got the money build me the God damn amp I dont care if in your opinion you think the omited detail is minor or not or you think your version is better than the copied/older version, its my god damn money and I want what I want so build me the god damn older, inferior shitty sounding version if thats what I ask for.

Sorry its late, I got to go to bed...

So you want a Jose slapped in an amp and that's it? Shit I can do that for you and will not check anything else out, what comes out of the amp is what you will get but it will be an exact Jose mod regardless of what it sounds like. What you are saying is exactly why there were shit sounding mods all over the place.

and there are still secrets out there today in the amp world.............

VH I through Diver Down sounds the way it does simple because of the recording technique and the board used. Tape, the board, preamps, mics, compression, speaker choice.

The amp was a Plexi. A nice sounding plexi. The live boots from 75 to the first record sound simply like a cranked plexi, sometimes goosed with an eq, sometimes variac'd and sometimes both. There's a fairly obviously evolution in tone from the early days up to just using the "Magic" Marshall as a preamp. The earliest boots sound like any cranked 1959 head. Listen to some of the boots from the early tour of Japan. No "Magic" Marshall there: Musicman heads, other Marshalls, etc. Sounds like Ed.

Not enough props are given to Donn Landee. HE is the sound of those albums. Diver Down forward, EVH was increasingly dabbling with an H949 - the warmth is gone and the micropitch is there ushering in the Van Hagar era.

Actually, he said he could and would build a replica of the amp -- nothing about "not" putting in that secret part. I believe he just didn't want to talk about the secret part in his post.
