Some cool EVH gear info...

As soon as I read this
1 added part which I prefer to keep to myself (Dave knows it well of course too). It is a very minor addition that Jose did giving it a slight bit more bass in the treble channel,
all the information in the post was pretty mcuh useless to me.

Being a gear-o-holic I need to know what every part is and if one small detail or item is changed or omitted from the original it just does not sound the same. Its the little details that make a otherwise good amp awesome.

So it sounds like the amp he is recreating to sell has this detail omitted so no thanks.

The whole point of that thread is the OP claimed that you can't get EVH's level of gain out of a stock Marshall...Pete and Blix clearly proved otherwise.

As for being secretive about the "added part" to Ed's amp, John also clearly stated that the minor mod was not necessary to cop his tone and that when the amp was dimed, it was essentially a transparent mod...I think that type of info, along with John identifying that most of the solder joints are original, is far from useless.

Eh..........I would rather have Aspen's plexi that Lynch used anyways

This...

Unfortunately that amp is no more (or at least original).
The purple one? What happened to it???!!!

The story is the OT went "poof", and then it never sounded the same so Aspen sold it to Guitar Center along with several other things.

I think one of the Plexi Palace board members has it now.
Now that you say that, I vaguely remember hearing it before, probably here. I guess i didn't want to remember :D
What a bummer...much like many look at EVH as having the "grail" tone, it was Lynch on ULAK and BFTA for me.

and also you can play through Ed's rig and you probably won't sound like him.

I have to agree.

BFTA is the best '80's tone (yes I know EVH was late '70's) :D

I have heard the shorted coil thing before as well....and I ruined a few pickups doing it.

I may be missing something, but you should easily be able to simulate this if the pickup comes with 4 conductor wiring without risk of ruining any pickups.

My P90 is a little too bright. I'd like to try a vintage paf type pickup and unwiring one side some time.

If it was such a minor mod then why is he keeping it to himself?

I have been reading posts for years on how EVH amps were modded from all different sources and as soon as some one puts that they are ommiting a certain part because its "not important" or they can build the same amp but they make a few changes to do it "their way" I stop caring. :aww:

Sorry about that, I just figured everyone here would know what "BFTA" was.

The first time i saw it, I thought "Big Fat Tits & Ass".

Valid point for sure. I still believe John when he says it's not an integral part of the tone though. None of us will probably ever know the real deal.
Ultimately, I think the mics, preamps, board, tape, etc played a major role in the overall tone, but that said, guys like Pete have done an impressive job of nailing it for the most part.

Whew! I just got done reading that TGP thread. Seriously one of the most interesting threads I have seen in a long while.
Lotsa haters, but dude, that one thread pulled out:

Pete Thorn
David Torn
Randall Aiken
John Suhr
?????? who knows who else!

Gassing for a 68 Plexi now...thanks guys!

Thanks, I realized I was being lazy and found it.

I am on page 14 now, and it is hilarious how some people believe what they want to believe.

On side note, I would sacrifice a virgin to have Pete's skill.

I was in the studio yesterday talking about the (purple plexi), so sad... And I am sure Reinhold fixed ed's amp...he is a bad ass!

Haha that was a great read, especially the contradicting statements e.g. "a minor part....that I will keep to myself" etc.. :) thanks.

If something is so minor and supposedly mostly unrelated to creating the tone, then why keep it secret?
And it's just gear ferrkrissakes! It's nothing until how you play it!

I know the guy posting that is Mr. Suhr but come on...

This is not the 1980's anymore when people had "secret settings" or a "secret rack piece" or "secret guitar techniques" when everything is available on the internet now for free including schematics and gut shots of just about every amp/mod ever made.

That is why in my post above I said as soon as I read that part about "never mind the minor detail that I will omit from our model we sell you" I just "disregard" the entire post. It's like those amp vendors that do their version of a Jose mod but refuse to do a exact copy of the Jose mod even if you request them to do it.

If I got the money build me the God damn amp I dont care if in your opinion you think the omited detail is minor or not or you think your version is better than the copied/older version, its my god damn money and I want what I want so build me the god damn older, inferior shitty sounding version if thats what I ask for.

Sorry its late, I got to go to bed...
