Budda SD45 (get an early one with switchable rectifier   )- You can even drop in 6L6s (cathode biased) and it will get more knock to it

or

Mesa Royal Atlantic or maybe an Electradyne

Seems like there is something obvious I am missing too

VH4 will be killer too!
Can you run a pair of EL34's in the Budda SD45...have you tried that?
The Budda's gain tone smokes the Electra Dyne's gain channels. My Electra Dyne is going to be very dusty if I don't sell it soon.

Would love to grab an SD45 head and use it with a 2x12 closed-back cab on the larger stage gigs.
I'm gonna own 10+ Budda's like you, I can see it now.

Yes you can run EL34's in the SD45, and was my favorite output tube in it. Course they are my faves anyway but never heard the 45 sound better than with a pair of 34's.

You are crazy boy, IMO you are covered and you are now just futzing around trying to enjoy the hobby of amp shipping, if you enjoy that just get weekly anal probes to get the same satisfaction.

Get with Carl and check out the Cornford, that is free and no anal probes.

Either a Gryphon or Hydra will do nicely.

Have you tried a Marsha? It's an amazing amp IMO. I'm trying to plan a trip to hang with Kage for a weekend...I could bring mine along if we get the details worked out.

Ch.3 on a VH4 is one of the best hi gain tones out there, IMO. Just awesome.

Heard a lot of great things about the Mesa RA 100, I think it matches up with your description. I am going to play one in the next couple days, I'll let you know what I think.

Have you tried a 20th Anny Shiva? Very cool amp.

I have not tried a Marsha. I would like to try one, but it's extremely hard for me to make free time at all. Between work, school, and band practice, I am done for

You guys are killing me with this VH4 talk :scared:

I would like to hear about the Royal Atlantic. I trust your ear, so keep me updated :D

I have not tried the Bogner either.

I know you said youve had enough of mesa but I'd give a big fat +1 for the Tremoverb. Especially the first and second year run. And they can be had for 1/2 the price or less then the VH4.

20th Anniversary Shivas are friggin amazing. Test one if you get a chance.

Depending on what he means by "metal",...he might even prefer one of the more classic designs, like the Regulus or Vega. Peters amps have a feel and response that no other higher gain amps have, in my opinion. They are deceptively versatile, and have controls that make it hard to make the amp sound bad. Nothing like them.
By the way, that's a picture of the previous format. This is a picture of the current format. And there is a special 10 year anniversary look that will be available soon.

I need an amp that:

-is thick sounding
-has very little fizz
-"gives" nicely on palm mutes
-saturates well

I'm looking for something great for modern rock/rock that doesn't really cross into metal territory.

Please post pictures and or names in the thread :D

Cheers,

Greg

I have el34s in my rectoverb. Black shadow speaker. Open back enclosure, lows all the way down...i can get that tone or pretty close to it. Ymmv... If u find the sweet spot in those rectos they are really awesome lil beasts.

But maybe the tone is in the grill cloth

I was thinking about chiming in about Peters as well. I have a 20 watt old style dual channel (2005 ish) that I picked up a while back it has the harrier and warhawk channels, and it can cover a lot of ground. For some give in the palm mutes I really dig low power, vintage mode, gain backed off a bit, and volume cranked up that gives it a bit more sag, and for me is great. I have ran this head through a bunch of different 112, 212, and 412 cabs (even a full stack for a while), and it has sounded great with most speakers except the V30 in my Orange PPC112, I put a Mesa BS90 in there, and it sounds sick!!!!

With the dampening control you can really dial in the agressiveness (for lack of a better way to describe it) of the amp. Turned down (more dampening) you get a warmer smoother sound, turned up, and you get a more pissed off more imediate feeling amp. That is by far my favorite feature of my Peters.

BTW I am planning on playing around with my new cab tonight. I might try to record something with the Peters. I will post it here for you if I get something sounding decent

Have you ever thought about a JSX? Its been the most versatile amp I've owned to date... Some nice cleans, the crunch channel is where I spend most of my playing. By far I think the best part of the amp. And of course the ultra channel, which I personally just use as a lead boost for solos. It cuts though the mix, and palm muting sounds great....i run the gain at maybe 10 o'clock.
