If you're interested I may be able to get you a Colossus amp to demo in a week or two. :)

You've got mail in your PM box ;)

I was thinking about one of these too. Good suggestion :)

You mean you can't get a great modern rock/rock tone with all those killer amps you have???   How bout a stock 5150 III ?

Every amp I has definitely falls into a niche in the overall tonal "big picture." I want something to do everything, because to me, that's what's important.

The Bogner is awesome for rocky stuff, but it's also got it's own midrange voicing that works for some things, but certainly not others.

The JVM is also great for rock, but it's got quite a bit of hair, and isn't the thickest thing out there.

I'm almost looking for something that is "too thick" without a boost, but something that will have that perfect amount of sag, squish, and fatness with one. I'm also looking for something broad tonally. I've heard the Framus Dragon is an awesome rock amp, but I've yet to stumble upon one.

Keep those suggestions coming :)

Thanks guys

Nitro running EL34s, Rockerverb w/EL34s, Mesa Tremoverb w/EL34s.

see the running theme?

Budda SD45 (get an early one with switchable rectifier   )- You can even drop in 6L6s (cathode biased) and it will get more knock to it

or

Mesa Royal Atlantic or maybe an Electradyne

Seems like there is something obvious I am missing too

VH4 will be killer too!
Can you run a pair of EL34's in the Budda SD45...have you tried that?
The Budda's gain tone smokes the Electra Dyne's gain channels. My Electra Dyne is going to be very dusty if I don't sell it soon.

Would love to grab an SD45 head and use it with a 2x12 closed-back cab on the larger stage gigs.
I'm gonna own 10+ Budda's like you, I can see it now.

Greg,
Roa has a Cornford, you should at least contact him and see if you can play it. It is a cool amp but imo it won't be what you are looking for as it already overlaps much of what you already have. I know that you are looking for something to add that has it's own thing going on. I think the Herbie will be too compressed for you and that's why I think the VH4 would be right up your alley:-)
Cheers,
Mike

Mesa Boogie 50 caliber + great amp. It gets into metal territory, and does rock quite nicely, and has a lot of tone shaping possibilities due to the GEQ.

Ulbrick Stadium 80/120 or Arena 50. Unique amps. Never seen one on the forum (or any other for that matter. They sound pretty good in clips IMO. )

Diezel Einstein
Egnater Renegade (very under-rated)
Mesa Royal Atlantic
Bogner Shiva?
Soldano something?
Another Baron?

I was thinking VH4 could be a cool idea... I have to think about this one.
This one man.....its in its own class....

Splawn Nitro. Bias them hot with good KT88 and crank them into a Mesa V30 cab.
not fizzy, big palm mute, good saturation (with the right pickups ex. emgs with pa2 booster)

Check this video on youtube. Rhythm guitar start at 2:51

Just have to say, I think it's really cool that Mike Fortin recommended another builder's amp. Granted, you already have 3 of Mike's creations, but still it goes to show that Mike wants you to be happy and find the sound you're after, even if it means going with another brand.

Everything you have described. No it does not cost an arm and a leg or have Diezel on the front of it, but does everything you're looking for like i originally mentioned.

EL34's, thick switch, bright switch, 50 watts, etc.

Greg step into ccv land.

CCVs are pretty hairy sounding amps in my experience with them. They also aren't super thick; they're pretty much so in the vein of a Jose Marshall. I've played psychodave's EXTENSIVELY on three different occasions, twice at my house, and once at his, as well as Nick's at one of the Fortin fests. I really like psychodaves. It's definitely the best I've heard in person and in clips, and definitely wouldn't mind owning one given certain circumstances, but it's not what I'm looking for.

Mike is a real good honest dude. He recommended my Ecstasy as well, and I am still thrilled by that thing :)

That Nitro clip above sounded pretty darned good. I've had experience with two Nitros. the4thlast1 on here had a Nitro that sounded amazing and he brought that sucker to one of the ampfests I had at my house. However, he sold that one, and got another, that I honestly thought sounded TERRIBLE. It was the flubbiest mess I've ever encountered, and we changed all the tubes, cables, bias, cabinets, whatever... IMO, that means the amps are too inconsistent to trust, and I don't want to flip amps all day long. I'm done with those days, because I have five amps that are permanent fixtures in the studio that sound amazing.

Those "oddball" amps are dangerous to flip
I've liked and heard the Einstein; I have to give it another chance.
Egnaters aren't my cup of tea.
Mesa... let's say I've had enough of Boogie for now
Shiva... I was thinking of that one too.
Soldanos... they sound almost identical to a 5150 under a microphone (anyone who says they don't is wrong, because in my experience, and clips posted by others comparing them, I even prefer the sound of a boosted 5150 to a SLO or Hot-Rod 100).
Baron, I wish Dave had time to take on this endeavor, but it may be a possibility.

I may give an Orange a shot; I don't recall loving them though, and they are also a bit hairy.

I need an amp that:

-is thick sounding
-has very little fizz
-"gives" nicely on palm mutes
-saturates well

I'm looking for something great for modern rock/rock that doesn't really cross into metal territory.

Please post pictures and or names in the thread :D

Cheers,

Greg

Greg,
I think you should look at a Diezel VH4, channel 3 is my fav. It would make an excellent addition to what you have for re-amping. It's got it's own signature tone.
Cheers,
Mike

Yes Greg. You need this.....

That would be nice, but I definitely don't have the change right now

PM me and we'll talk ;)
