Take a look at the Bogner Burnley. It's pricey but it gives a real kick.

Carcass = 5150 (Marshall, Amott was the 5150 guy)

Entomed = Peavey

Pestilence = Engl

Suffocation = ampeg (they've been using Peavey a while now)

Cannibal Corpse = Crate (they haven't used Crate in a VERY long time, it's Mesa these days with various amps in the studio)

Dying Fetus = Ampeg (Engl)

Some of these bands are still together and do not use Marshalls. (Bill Steer uses Marshalls)

Was just a suggestion anyhow.

Just for the record

Let me also suggest one more thing...an ISP Decimator pedal. Don't know how I lived without one for all these years...great and needed addition if you play medium/high gain stuff. IMO...

A lot of Death Metal sounds are not all that tight and can be almost sludgy at times. Honestly any decent wattage amp that breaks ups a bit will do then use pedals. I could easily do DM with an 800 and the right pedal.

This. JCM800 plus pedal was used a lot when Death Metal began in the 80's. The 5150 was not even out then! The Swedish DM sound is not tight at all.

he has an ns2 I run a decimator though

I cant believe no one mentioned a ProCo Rat. And BTW Obituary never recorded with a 5150 and Nile records with DSL's.

I thought about the Rat..... But stock it does not have enough bass for a lot of stuff. I believe the Ultimate Drive would be more to most peoples taste.

an Ibenhad TS9 will do the trick... but if you can find a Barber SuperSport used it will send an 800 into sonic bliss... just set the internals to its "TS killer" settings and you have instant brutality... I especially like the Barber with Marshalls...

If anyone in my band brought a RAT box into a jam they'd get told to leave it at the door with their shoes lol. I loathe those things.

I can't find the source for the Obituary recordings (it's out there I wasn't just making things up) but I did find another stating Trevor always used the rat and Marshall's but here you can see a quote from Nile guitarist http://www.metalsucks.net/2012/08/07/ri ... l-sanders/

Obviously some DM bands used Marshall but I still think it's not the " go to" amp for death metal.

And Fetus used Ampeg for a very long time early on before the Engl

Yes.... Jeff Beck, Joe Walsh, David Glamour and the rest of them did nothing interesting using them. :)
... like a lot of things it is only a matter of taste.

Who's David Glamour? lol jk

Were also talking about death metal in this thread not classic rock and blues rock. The RAT box isn't for me in any genre, I had a guy we recorded an album with that was constantly trying to put it in front of my amp during recording and then my former teacher swore by them as well. Not for me.

I think I should have probably also provided some examples of what he is looking for tonally because there's a lot of bands being tossed around in here that just don't have the tone that we would be looking for. I would say Carcass, The Haunted, Decapitated, Sanctification, Dying Fetus, Soreption, Behemoth, Revocation and others are kind of the bands that we pull from inspiration wise. Tonally I think he is looking for tight, clear, lots of gain and a good level of thickness. Were going to try this Joyo pedal mixed with his MXR and see what' up from there. You guys have been unreal with helping out and providing options. Keep em up.

I don't think I would use a Rat with a 5150 either to be honest. It would just compress the sound & lose bass.

The Ultimate Drive is very similar to a ocd.
Joyo US Dream is similar to a Suhr Riot.

These would be the first ones I would try. Like said above..... A different amp might be the best way.

I was using a Marshall 900 and a Mesa dual at the times that the RAT was being tossed at me. Just not my thing.

My guitarist is a cheap ass, really not a gear nerd at all, more of a whatever works kind of guy but I wanna make sure his tone and mine work together. The joyo was cheap, a year or so ago I wouldn't have bothered with Joyo stuff but after trying and keeping their phase 90 copy, digital delay and analog delay, I have been won over. I haven't tried anything gain oriented from them but the clips seem good.

i think a Keeley modded ts-9 is perfect for a Marshall.

however for death metal like tones,u may wanna go with a Dead Horse overdrive.

EQ (with level and mid bump) before or after SD1, what's the difference?

Ive tried both ways, was just using the SD1 for leads and couldn't hear a massive difference in tone

I would lose the SD1 and try the eq by itself.... Bump the mids and overall level, or grab something that doesn't rob low end..maybe an ocd or the new OD1X...I used to double boost my 800 and Jubilee with an eq pedal, mid bump and a Joyo ultimate drive..an ocd clone. Level noon, gain barely on. An SD1 is a classic but like many pedals will suck low end. The new Boss OD1X has a low end dial, so you can dial it back. I use that pedal by itself now, and need nothing more. :rock:

Death Metal tone at its Marshally best. One of my favorite bands that nobody knows about. The singing may be a little raspy, but the guitar work and OD'd Marshall tone of Tommy T Baron is nothing short of fantastic. These guys were the Rush of Death Metal back in the 80's and this guys Army of Guitars sound is tight focused and heavy!!! If any of you guys haven't listened to Coroner or may have missed them while you were all locked up on Master of Puppets or Reign in Blood, do yourself a favor and revisit this band on YouTube. "No more color" ,"Mental Vortex", "Grin", and their self titled "Coroner" are still fresh with great death metal riff age and solos that will put a smile on your face. It's a 80's death metal sound that is all Marshall, tight heavy and focused.
