On Friday, March 13, while on a spring break vacation with the family life took a turn. We have two young German Sheperd dogs. Both males and litter mates. For the most part, they are awesome dogs. But sometimes they get into it with one another. Generally, when this happens, I step back and let them have at it until they are both tired. Well, they got into it and my daughter happened to be sitting next to them when they started up. I instinctively grabbed dogs to move them away from her. As I went to grab them, my hand got in the way of two pissed off dogs. My hand modeling days are over, I'm afraid. I suffered what the ER described as a traumatic amputation.

Basically, from where my nail started is now gone. There was no way to save the tip, and the bones below had been shattered. On the 24th, I saw a plastic surgeon in an attempt to save what was left of the finger. I am hopeful that with some time and work, I will be back to my usual level of sucking at guitar...lol! If not, I guess I'll have to slow down, turn the gain down and invest in some tan pants...

I am grateful that I didn't lose more of my thumb. I am grateful that I kept the dogs off of my daughter. I am grateful that I got hurt and not my wife or the kids. I am most certainly not happy, but I am grateful. Anyway... I could certainly use some thoughts and mojo in the coming weeks.

And before anyone asks, yes, we are keeping the dogs. I was not the intended target. But they are both going to obedience classes starting soon.

Ouch! SFW!:shocked::shocked:Sending you some mojo and hopefully things heal up quickly! :2thumbsup:🙏

Keep a close eye on that wound. One of my friends wife was a county dog catcher got attacked by a pitbull and it tore the shit of her calf and she had multiple infections due to the bacteria in the dogs saliva. She had multiple rounds of heavy duty antibiotics before they got the infection under control.

Thanks! I've been through two rounds of antibiotics. One was specifically for dog bites. Had to wait until the 24th for the surgery so they could be sure there was no infection.

Daaaaaaammmmn! That super sux, hate to hear it. Glad you're keeping the pups.

One of the greatest guitarists, the granddaddy of heavy metal, riff lord Tony Iommi, made some of the best music ever missing some finger tips.
Django Reinhardt, still a huge influence today, made some of the best music, with the fastest and cleanest playing ever, with just 2 working fingers on his fretting hand.
You're going to be good man, no tan pants required. Glad you didn't get mangled any worse, and they didn't hit your radial artery.

Wishing you a speedy recovery, and hope you're playing your best riffs a few months from now, after you discover your new way of playing.

Edited to say: Nearly lost the tip of the middle finger on my fretting hand when I was a teen and getting into guitar. I used the metal finger guard to play slide while blood ran down my hand. Thankfully, the bone didn't shatter, and I still have the tip, even if I can't feel anything and the fingernail is a bit different than was before.

That looks brutal. May you have a speedy recovery.

Keeping both of those dogs together is asking for more problems. Your thumb is proof they haven't settled the beef for dominance in the pack and that it is deadly serious. Hopefully the obedience instructor can offer some solutions. Good luck.

That sucks. Hopefully it heals up good.

FWIW almost three years ago I severed the extensor tendon in my left ring finger in a work accident. I couldn't move it for days until I had surgery. It was a few months without guitar while my band tried to practice without me.

It was the practice and dedication I put in during my recovery that totally transformed my playing. The exercises I did to regain my hand function made me better after the accident than I was before. If you work hard at it, it might actually improve your playing, as weird as it sounds. You just gotta stay positive.

I mean, it did Tony Iommi wonders.

Ouch man, losing parts or whole fingers is my worst nightmare. Makes me feel sick to my stomach just looking at your pic.

Hope it doesn't hinder your playing in any way.

That looks absolutely awful! You took the brunt of that one for sure!

Wishing you a good recovery!

Think positive man and I know you'll get back to playing again soon. As many have mentioned, many musicians who have overcome accidents. Hang in there man!

I hope you heal Up as best as possible.
Great job stepping in & keeping everyone safe.
I have 75 lb twin shepherd littermate sisters that are 5 years old & that is one of my fears. The have only escalated twice & I was able to shut it down before it got to that point.

Good luck with the training as well.

Sorry bro. Sounds like your dogs need to be pan broke. Father in law hit one of his bear dogs in the head with a cast iron pan he fed them with when it tried to bite him or something. Knocked it out… thus the legend of pan breaking was born…

Holy shit. I always knew German Shepards were capable of this, but you rarely hear about this kind of accident.

If it makes you feel any better, one of my eyes had a strange vision change last fall. I'm having it checked out, but it has been "disappointing" having to adjust to the change. Sometimes, things just happen in life that you can't predict.
