Pretty sure chris was lip syncing. You can see that his dynamics never change when his mouth moves closer or farther from the mic. i'd like to think he wasn't but thats always a good give away for me. i thought the rest of the mix sounded good but as others have said could have used more bass.

The music was live though, you can hear some of the slight offness of the guitar work and what not, so I am not sure how they would pull that off syncing streaming lyrics to it. His vocals were mixed pretty low so it was hard to make out everything.

Watching it right now... Man, With his hair down Cornell looks much younger! Hahahaha... crazy!

For me, Matt Cameron belongs in Soundgarden... he has no business in Pearl Jam... PJ neeeeeeeds to get Dave Abbruzzese's back... one of the best "feel" drummers of all time IMO. That mutha was living in the pocket! He's like the Michael Jackson's 80's jacket of drummers! Awesome pocket(s)...

I couldn't agree with this any more.

Yeah I hate to say it, but you're probably right. Cornell is my favorite singer to come from the "grunge" era, and his voice is killer recorded. He has a great cool factor, and his melodies are haunting. However........live he tends to be really nasally, and lacks the balls that his recorded voice has. IMO he sounded too good to be live on Conan. Having said that, I like the new song, and the vocals are killer on it.

It's called a click track.

I'm not sure I'm convinced he was... at first I thought so, but as the song went on it seemed like he was off key enough that it was real. Hard to say given the mix was so guitar-heavy.

Not lip synced, just over processed.
Chris has a very powerful voice and always pulls away from the mic.

Im just happy to see them again. But I agree they sound amazing on record. Ive seen them about a dozen times back in the 90s, They sucked balls every time. Sounded like shit too. Just screachy noise. Kim is awesome in the studio but sloppyas hell live. Still, Superunknown is one of my favorite albums EVER. I wore that cassette out twice rockin out in my firebird in highschool

And am I the only one that thinks that tune is totally weak? Its a reject from the Motorfinger sessions right? Blah

If he was lip syncing, he wasn't using the vocal tracks from the recorded version. It sounds different. Play them side by side. The Badmotor session version has a lot more grit and he just sounds younger and different. Maybe he pre-recorded some live takes and they synced up parts of the song with a click track, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was all live.

Gotta say again, I love this band! They could've come back and really tarnished their name but they went right back to their best. (BTW, Kim's always been sloppy as hell, even on record. It's part of their sound)

yeah dude, I know what a click track is, don't think they did it that way. Soundgarden is a performance band, not a lip sync'd pop artist dancing around.

I thought they sounded great. Cameron is awesome in PJ or Soundgarden, it doesn't make a bit of difference. Some of you guys really need to stop analyzing things so much and just dig the music. Don't like it? Write something better. Besides, isn't it great to see real musicians on tv every now and then?

I agree.. That's their signature sound... Almost like a train wreck in motion.. Always a bit fast or a bit slow, especially Kim.

So is Ozzy but I personally heard a backing vocal track on his last tour when they did the new material. I don't know that he was lip syncing or not. I just thought it suspicious that he sounded as good as he did. You asked how they could do it, and well I simply answered the question. Using a click track doesn't mean the band isn't playing live. Heck "live" bands use them all the time to keep their meter straight. I hope he was singing live tbh.

Pete, who plays with Chris chimed in to say he doesn't do that ever, so it has been answered.

Yeah I saw, so I guess I have to shut up now even though I'm not the one who brought it up? One question though, was Pete with him at Conan? /ponders.......

FWIW I tend to think it was live more than likely after watching it several times.

He would know though.

And I just talked to Dave Rat their sound guy and he said no Lip sync and no vocal track
