My Boogie MkV:35 usually plays through a EVM12L cab. In the day, it was a MkIII or MkIV and Boogie metal grill 4x12 with 2 EVMs and 2 C90s. Amazing. Sounded like a blanket was lifted off my V30 cab in prior.
Today I swapped cabs on my MkV and Soldano SLO50 which has an Orange PC212 (v30 loaded).
MkV+1xEVM12L - Lacks gain and midrange honk. Creamy smoothness though.
MkV+ 2xV30 - Holy gain, but the leads don’t clean up.
SLO50 + 2xV30 - Perfect speaker for it. Crunchy, warmth and creamy with less gain.
SLO50 + EMB 12L - Too hifi. A bit brittle. Tons of punch though. Would never pair these guys.
But it made me wonder—for the MkV, what is a speaker between the EVM and the V30. That has some midrange punch for the gain, but also retains the creaminess of the leads? Is that the Celestion CL80/C90 (that I had in the top part of my Boogie 4x12)?
I plan to acquire a greenback 2x12 soon for another project, but I get that’s a step in the wrong direction from this question…
Or, if not one speaker, wonder if a CL80/C90 + V30 could be a good mix as a 2x12 for the MkV?
