... for an at-home basement player who likes metal, shredding solo work, hard rock and cleans sometimes. The Colossus is my first high wattage amp so I'm only running a 1x12 right now, I do play it pretty loud even through the one speaker. I've read a few threads basically saying more speakers sound better, basic theory being speakers generally sound better when not pushed near its max power rating (i.e. less power per speaker = better sound) while using more surface area to generate more volume: seems to me it's like balancing the optimal amp output power (high) to optimal speaker power (for 30W speakers, low). I'm thinking of two speakers, either a single 2x12 or two 1x12. A 4x12 is highly unlikely.

I have a EVH 5150III cab w/ G12H30 Anniv. speaker. To me the H30 is bright sounding with big bass and somewhat scooped mids. While I don't mind this I believe I might want more definition in the mids of my overall sound, at times I find the H30 mids sound a bit coarse.

What would you guys recommend to me for a speaker, cab, and cab configuration?

I actually love the Colossus with H30's. Go with a Rhodes built cab with Weber 1265's or for
more metal the 75's /v30's in an X. I've played both and both are excellent!! I'd be happy with either option.

For 1x12 I recommend a G12K100.
For a 2x12 two G12-65s.

V30s will also give a nice midrange definition but need to be in a 4x12 to sound balanced IMO.

BTW where in Canada are you ?

My favorite cabs for just about anything are Mesa 2x12 or 4x12 Rectifier Cabinets and a Splawn Cabinet with Celestion EVH speakers.

Hard to beat Mesa and Splawn cabs. They're the best! Rhodes is on par with them.

How many H30s were you running, 2 or 4? It's possible just the lone speaker in my case doesn't sound as good at volume on its own, I had contemplated getting a second EVH 1x12 just to see what happens.

@ All: How are the highs on the 1265, Celestion EVH, V30, K100? Rivera had a YT video testing out a bunch of 1x12s with a couple short mid-gain rock clips, I need to revisit that. Mesas are pretty common so should be easy to find those to test. The 4x12 EVH cab has the EVH speakers and that's probably the closest to the Splawn cab, Long & McQuade has one in town. 4x12 is bigger than I was looking at though.

You have a Rhodes Colossus and I don't. Therefore, I refuse to assist on the basis of unadulterated jealously and envy.

Amen to that  That's a dream amp I'd love to own

Lol. If it helps lessen those feelings, I'll point out that I did refrain from talking about amp itself. :D

Near end of year could be the time though: Rhodes Gemini. :)

Using 4 H30's. It sounds amazing.

The 1265's are smoother on the top end than 25w greenbacks. I think they have a fantastic snarl to them in a 2x12.

Scumback Naked Cab with either:

- Blackback H75
- Blackback M75
- M75
- J75

suit to tastes!

I would have that 1x12 H30 turned inside out by now. You are going to get way too much speaker break up at minimal volume to support the grunt of that amp. If a 412 is out of the question, just get a 212 with V30's. Don't fret with all the speaker mixing options. That amp has enough EQ control to dial out or in whatever you need.

I'm not sure what speaker breakup sounds like but I'm playing with the master and channel volumes at noon to 1 o'clock, and chugging along the bass blooms without farting out like a cheap subwoofer turned up too high, and it is loud even at 20 feet away. I suspect the H30 Anniv @ 16 Ohms can take this (50 oz. magnet vs 35 oz. on the GB) as my amp isn't outputting its max power yet. The Mesa 2x12 with V30s is still a consideration, I'll just have to find some time to try as many speakers out as I can. Scumbacks would be an expensive experiment although I've heard great things about them and some clips sounded nice, just hard to justify the shipping to Canada and duties, etc. in case it didn't work out.

I *think* I've narrowed down my choice of speakers to either V30 or Eminence Governor. I've heard what clips I could find (or other members have found) comparing the two, and although some clips I've heard were pretty well recorded, I'd like some opinions from anyone who has tried both speakers in a closed-back cab. I'm mainly wondering which has the more detailed mid-range of the two. I'm still in search of a replacement for the G12H30 70th that I find not only very bright, probably too bright, but the mid-range sounds coarse (not rough, just not detailed enough compared to say Weber Legacies). I've decided going with a 2x12 cab just not sure which speakers yet.

Sounds great with both my K100 2x12's and PrivateJack 4x12. Would like to try it with some G12-65's though

  I love you guys too!

That's a pretty nice clip there, Kyle. Was it played through the clean channel or the crunch?

I'll look into the other speakers suggested as well. I can see this being the next phase in my GAS pains, more ceramic than I'll reasonably need. I might as well just buy like 5 or 6 speakers at once then just sell off the ones I'm not happy with.

According to Chris it more or less progressed from Clean to Crunch to Lead 1. The bit of dirt on the Clean was a Klon clone...

You should get in touch with Chris at Arsenal and pickup one of his Nomades cabs. Have him load it with V30s and you'll be set. ;)
