Hey Drew,

I'm a big John Sykes fan and was curious too about the speakers in his Marshall 4x12 cabs. Do you mean Celestion G12K-100 speakers? I'm surprised he wasn't using either Celestion Greenback or Vintage 30 speakers or the Electrovoice EV12L speakers considering how agressive his sound is.

If those are 800 cabs with 100 watters then try are 1982B cabs with G12H 100s. Not as warm as the K100s, I had one exactly like that and returned it. Sounded too scooped to me. Unless John has swapped them out for K100s. Of course, I'm sure he gets them to sound a hell of a lot better than I did lol...

I believe they are the 1982B cabs. I know we popped the back off when he was headed to Japan in 2004 so he could get the same cabinets there and I recall them being 100 watt speakers. John asked the promoter for 1982B cabs. They ended up giving him regular 1960B cabs with 75 watters--which is what is heard on "Bad Boy Live."

However, his favorite cabs were made by Wizard and they have 65 watt Celestions. He had 6 of those cabs. We sold 4 of them and then John realized how much he liked them and we bought two of them back!

Thanks for the info. But for why did he have Wizard cabs? Did/does he have Wizard amps?

G12 65s are great speakers, especially with a Marshall. Older T75s can sound very close to 65s.

I missed one that was local on bay a few years back.

Had 65's in my old Marshall 20th Anniv cab - love those speakers

They sometimes pop up on GC.com. Old 800 cabs, usually between 3-400. My last 2 were from them, an 81 and an 83. Both with 65s. Of course, I sold them. But if you check from time to time you might find one.

I mean I missed one of Johns Wizards that was local...I mailed Wizard amps and they verified it as legit

He's always had the 4 hole JCM 800 1959 superlead heads. Those are the preferred 50's he likes among the numerous Mesa's he owns. Cool pic!

I think those Marshalls are actual Jose A modded Marshalls..Bad Boy Live has just killer Marshall tone.

I know that I was trying to buy a Marshall cab with 65s and Skyes got to it first. lol. I would have been happy to bow out for him.

They have to be, unless they were boosted. They're way too aggressive sounding to be stock. The tone on that album is brighter than usual for him, as well (from the T-75 cabs, maybe...?).

No boost--even though the first pic is Thin Lizzy, John had the same signal chain for that solo run in Japan--straight into one Jose modded 50 watt Marshall and one 4x12. The other amp and 4x12 in the pic are backups. John did say between the power in Japan and the different cabs, the amp sounded different than he was used to.

Funny you say that..had a rehearsal last year, my drummer owns a hobby farm and we play in a pole shed. My Marshall sounded different that day, still good but just different. After practice I noticed my PT was extremely warm, and went home thinking it might be on the way out. Sounded like it used to the next day at home..called my drummer and he said that his power seems to fluctuate lower from time to time...I guess my Marshall was sort of Variaced!
