KT77's make a difference.

I had EL34's in both my Nitro and Quick Rod. Damn I need to revisit these with different tubes.

I still like the KT88 Nitro more than the EL34 tbh. Generally I am a big KT88 guy.

I really think a major part of the clip is the K100. They get along with Splawns extremely well.
I had a KT77 loaded Nitro and a buddy of mine had KT88 in his and I felt like his smoked mine lol. More controlled low end at low to high volumes.

I've never played K100, but I could totally see them getting along with Splawns. My same buddy also had a crappy B52 cab and whatever was in there was darker and flatter in the mids than my Diezel rear loaded cab. The Nitros sounded way better through that crappy cab than through my Diezel   .

Splawns sound great with KT-88's and 6550's. I've been running SED 6550C's in my Splawn modded Marshall since Scott modded it in 2003. If you run KT-88's stay away from the JJKT-88, the low end is very compressed and soft response wise. I tried them in a build and did not like them at all. I really prefer just regular Sovtek KT-88's, they're reliable and reasonable... Scott Splawn was using them back in the day, also I think the newer Tung Sol's are supposed to be pretty decent too.

I prefer KT88’s in my 05 QR. I just ordered a custom 50w SS that will have 2 KT88’s for on the road, gonna be nasty. I’ve also owned a few el34 equipped QR’s that sounded great. I’ve never heard a bad splawn. Nitros aren’t my thing, weird mids, and just don’t have what the Quick Rods do.

Personally I like my KT88 Promod over a quick rod too. But I think the QR is better with EL34 than the Nitro with EL34.

I use EHX KT88's atm.

EDIT I TYPO'D THIS.

a KT88 Nitro is more superior to a EL34 Nitro than a PM to a QR.

bottom line is that I am a KT88 guy.

A Pro Mod is the same amp/same circuit as a quick rod, only with KT88’s in the power section. So, if you have a KT88 loaded quick Rod...same.

I just Custom ordered a 50w SS w/KT88’s from Scott, should be here this week. Going to be a burner!

I typo'd.

Nitro KT88 is much more better than a EL34 Nitro.

A PM is better than a QR but not as much as the Nitro difference.

Yeah, I’m not into the Nitro’s too much man, but I’m still not sure what you mean about the Pro Mod vs. a Quick Rod. Do you mean versus a Quick Rod w/EL34’s? It’s the same amp if they are both KT88 loaded.

KT88 Nitro is more superior to a EL34 Nitro in comparison to a KT88 PM than a QR.

Or another way I find more use out of a EL34 QR over a EL34 Nitro.

In other words a EL34 4%is at the bottom of the food chain.

My 6V6 SS is a bad little sucker. I LOVE it. It's a loud 22 watts too. The KT88 A SS should be fucking awesome!
Again though I am a KT88 guy.

I was using Creamback 65's with mine. I've been really satisified with my Monomyth 2204 but I'm starting to get G.A.S for another Splawn. Damn you guys.

Whoops..wrong spot.

So the clip in my OP was user Wolf doing heavier shit with a Competition (which is essentially a single channel 50w Quick Rod - running KT77s).

This clip was just posted by user PDC and this him copping 'brownsounds' with his Nitro.

Kinda cool to see the flexibility of these amps.

Just wanted to get some opinions on the 'brown' sound of the Nitro clip post above from PDC before this thread rides off into the sunset. I think it is one of the best brown sounds of a Nitro that I've heard.

That sounds pretty rad - I bet it'd sound even better if he layed the cab horizontally

I've wanted a Splawn since 07. I dont know what the hell I'm waiting for. This clip sounds so full of that rich tone they are known to have. It holds everything together nice and tight.

I need to try some KT77s and brighter preamps in mine ASAP

I found a great compliment of tubes in my Competition. JJ KT77's in the power section, a JJ ECC803S in V1, Tungsol 12AX7 in V2, and JJ ECC83S in V3.

KT77s, a 5751 in V2 and a 12AT7WC in V3 sound great in the QR I just grabbed. Very open gain structure now.

Last time I was on the splawn boards it was a ghost town except for the hundreds of spam threads

I will have to try a 5751, though I don't want to neuter gear 1 too much.

Being that the Competition only has 3 preamp tubes, I would think V3 would be a phase inverter? I may try a Sovtek LPS in there.

Since my travel has been cut out, I'm "working from home" this week. I have a guitar showing up today, so I'll do some tube rolling too. I think I may shift the Tungsol to V1, try the GE/JAN 5751 in V2, and the LPS in V3. Might be a tad bright, so I'll also try it with leaving the ECC803 in V1 first. It's a great tube - very musical, less bright, though not as warm as the JJ ECC83S. I find that tube a little sterile for V1, but great for adding warmth to a bright amp beyond V1.
