So I have an older Splawn Quickrod that still gives me quite a bit of pleasure when I crank it up

Thing is I saw a post recently about dropping a Ruby 12AX7HG into it to rock it. I looked at the new manual online and it has 4 pre tubes, while mine only has 3.

SO, which one should I replace with the Ruby High Gain pre, is it just V1??

Help appreciated, thanks.

v1 or v2....if it is too noisy in v1 then try v2.

Thanks for that update blasphemy...have you tried this?

Has anyone tried the Ruby 12AX7 HG with their QR??

Those old 3 pre QR's are the best imo. I have one and always end up going back to Mullard EL34's and jj pres...and I absolutely hate jj's in any other amp. It just works so well in my QR

I hear the Mullards for sure.

I don't know about the JJ pre's. I will give the Ruby HG a try and see what happens..hopefully

I have Rubys in my 5150. Maybe I'll do some swapping tomorrow night

I have a 2012 QR and have a Ruby 12ax7HG in V2 and V3 and a TungSol 12ax7HG in the phase inverter and it sound killer  Mine has the 4 pre amp tubes and V1 is the clean..

In my old 3 channel I BY FAR would say to throw in a Jan Phillips 12ax7wa with the blue grey colored writing. Turns the thing into creamy goodness. All you need is one in either v2 or v1.

Just wanted to post my findings from this morning.

OK, I tried putting a Ruby 12AX7HG+ in V1 and V2 of my 3 pre tube QR.
There is no doubt the level of gain is increased and there was a creaminess to the distortion.
I liked it in both places, V1 and V2.
I felt like both places got a basically equivalent effect, increased gain and/or increased creaminess.

The thing is, I felt like in the process the QR lost a small amount of the growl or in your face quality that I truly LOVE about this amp.
Don't get me wrong, it was an excellent idea and if you are looking for a creamier kind of gain from your QR, I would swap tubes and try it for yourself.

However, I think for me, I will stay with the JJ's, because they have "that" QR sound for me.
Maybe it's where the weird mids come from, haha.
I just can't let go of "that" sound because it's where I can get the amazing VH tones on gear 1.
Not too much gain, incredibly articulate, and just the right amount of pissed off

What's really great to know is if I want to change the tones of my QR, it is as easy as dropping a Ruby HG+ in V2.

Experiment successful. Anybody tried anything different that you found you really liked?

It sounds like you have Blasphemy, with the Jan Phillips 12AX7WA, getting that creaminess thing going :D
