I am thinking about getting a Splawn Competiton or a Marshall JVM 205H. Which do you guys think is better? I like to try and play ever thing from the Stones to Sabbath. Thanks for the help.

Stones and Sabbath you culd save yourself a ton and buy a DSL 100.

+1

I loved my Competition, but Stones and Sabbath were not what a Comp. was built for, imo.

As far as build quality it's not close, Splawns are pretty solid and Marshalls do have a cheap feel about them.

Tone is always subjective so try and get out and play them.

Thanks for the answers gentlemen. More for me to think about.

Umm, the Competition is a single channel head. It is also geared more towards fire-breathing modded Marshall tones than the old classic sounds. I had one for about 2 years and loved it, but you may have to do some knob twisting to get the different sounds. The JVM is a channel switcher, so there are more sounds instantly accessable.

I've not played a Competition, I have had a Quickrod for over two years now.
Used it for various gigs, and different flavors of rock. For me, it ended my amp search.

That said, if I had to replace it for some reason, and it wasnt covered on an insurance policy.
I'd get a DSL50, not because of anything to do with my Quickrod.
Because times are tough.

Seriously, check out the DSL's... especially for stones to sabbath stuff.

What will happen first? Hell freezes over, Vai is spotted with a Les Paul, or Diggy Yams recommends a Splawn over brand X.

I am trying to figure out from the HC reviews if the Nitro is a guitar amp or bass amp

Never happen

troublehead said the competition could get an instant "don't break the oath" tone

and if you ever want to venture into brutal metal territory, Nile uses DSLs.

Vintage Modern (get the 100W to have more headroom)

I owned the 50W and it's just pure

Perfect for Stones => Sabbath.

I needed more sounds for my band, so now it's a Bogner Shiva, but I am missing that lead tone from the VM.

I love the JVM , But the amp I play right now is my JCM 800 2203 KK heah.

The tone with the beast engaged is IMHO awsum and the gate works really well , The problem I have with the JVM and I use it OD1 Red is it noisy as hell you really have to lower the gain alot. And I use it use as they diagramed with almost everything on 12.oclock.

I love the tone but dam the hum is annoying so a Imho a noise gate is a must if you are going to use OD1 or 2 And for what ever reason OD-1 is my favorite channel.

Getting back to the Kerry King if you dont use the beast , it sounds like a JCM 800 that you would need a distortion or a over drive pedal to boost, With the beast no need IMHO for any further distortion or OD pedals.

The Splawn is capable of all those great Marshall tones. Gear 1 and 2 without OD2 engaged yields a more vintage Marshall crunch. I LOVE Marshalls. I own a '71 Super Lead, and in comparing my Splawn QR to both the JVM and the VM I have to say that I'd pick the Splawn over those 2 any day.

I wish they would have put a loop in those heads..
