Ok, so me getting a Splawn is a running joke on another forum I frequent. so I decided to post here instead. that and i wuv u guyz

Ok, so i'm putting my downpayment on a Splawn coming up really quick. probably the 1st. problem is....I'm not sure which one to get!

I play Rock, Hard Rock, Blues, Pop/Rock and a little bit of metal and country thrown in for good measure

I'm looking at the Competition and the Super Comp. the Single channel versions of the Nitro and Quickrod.

I really like both and I'm just not sure which to get. I like how flat out HUGE the Nitro sounds, but it doesn't seem as versatile. I'm scared the QR won't have enough "UMPH" for me. So, help me out! pwwweeeeeeeezzzzzeeee.

I gotta run, so post it up and i'll be back in a few hours

Thanks in advance

Brett.

The Quickrod has tons of umph. The low end is tight and clear. The difference between it and the Nitro is where the midrange sits. The Nitro's mids are in the lower end of the spectrum which makes it great for dropped tune stuff. The QR sounds like it would fit what you are playing currently a little better. But as always YMMV... :)

I say get the QR. Especially if you want more of an open lighter tone. I just ordered one.

Quickrod for sure. The Quickrod can definitely deliver some thump, not as much as the Nitro, but I'm sure you won't need an overwhelming amount of bass (that's what I thought of my Nitro when I had it).

I have a QR and it suits me well. I play mostly hard rock/80's rock and a few modern songs. The QR can be quite overbearing in the mids, but a graphic eq or even a bbe sonic stomp can do wonders for it. I run the sonic stomp with mine and i can get all the percieved bass i could ever need.

Don't look for a chimey clean with either if you are running strictly HB's

after owning both i think the quickrod will work best for you.

I would suggest the Quick Rod also based on what you are looking for. There are a couple of Splawn dealers on Rig Talk that can get it for you quicker too. Heck, I have a new Quick Rod in the box ready to go.

Wow, people like their QR's!

I'm thinking I will be going with a Competition then! I'll be giving Dal a call later in the week probably to discuss some stuff with him. Hopefully its the right choice.

any particular speaker combos people like other than the typical SB/BB?

Splawn 4x12 with SB's. The amp really shines with that cab/speakers. The thing is, the QR has a big low-end so the wrong speakers (lower-wattage) may cause some boomines. I know it did for me when I was using GB's. However, with the SB25's and a Splawn 4x12, I get a tight focused low-end. Not boomy at all and there's no ear-fatigue. My only complaint about that cab is that my other amps sound too focused and aggressive thru it.

You're list of styles is pretty diverse...why not go with the much more versatile Quickrod to better cover your needs?

Because my main styles really revolve around the first three, which the Comp with cover just fine from what I've heard.

SB25s is what I'm thinking of doing.

Between the gears and OD boosts, the QR can handle what he's looking for without issue. It covers more ground than people give it credit for.

Oh and don't be afraid to give it a boost. Set the gain lower and hit with a good OD pedal. My fave is the OD808. You may also want a delay with input attenuation (like a rocktron intellifex). With that you can sounds awesome at mousefart levels... ;)

Thats what I said.

How are you intending on running the Competition to get your country tones? Just curious...

Country is more of a hobby than a money maker, I don't think i've ever played a country song live. so it's not really imperative to have a great or even a really good country tone. Hard Rock and Rock/Pop/Rock are the things I need the most.

Thanks for the help guys, keep any info you have coming, there just isn't enough info on these things. I've played a OLD QR I think it was like an 04, it came into the store and was gone a week later, it sounded great, and I haven't found one since.

EDIT: i really don't need the cleans of the QR that badly, like what cleans I need I use my volume knob now, this should be no different.
