Not a fan at all of his high gain stuff, but I'm definitely digging that tone...

I'm surprised this thread isn't on fire!! This cat knows amps and I have to agree, is making some of the finest out there - period.

Indeed. I am a huge fan of his work. Great guy to talk with and just in general a great guy as well

What exactly don't you like about his high gainers bro? to me the tones that come out of an Ultra Lead or Deliverance are top of the line  ...

Most of the complaints about VHT's high gain voicing revolve around a generally dry tone (lots of gain but little saturation) and upfront honky mids that are far removed from the more familiar Marshall sweet sounding midrange character. Yeah they're pretty tight and cutting but the high gain tones don't sound particularly pleasing IMO.

I do like the clean and lower gain side of VHT amps but thats it.

exactly....can't stand them personally. For example, I saw Death Angel, Testament and Anthrax last month. DA was playing Engl's, Skolnick: Mode 4 and Anthrax through VHT's. Anthrax had far and away the worse tone of the night. Dry as toast and lost in the mix...just like every other VHT high gainer I've heard. It's a far cry from their earlier legendary Marshall and Mesa tones...

:aww: :scared:

Hmm thats a bummer.
Do you think Anthrax just had a bad mix/sound that night?..... it happens :dunno:

VHT's really sound great in a band mix, Helmet for instance.

I love Steve Fryette's work

I think the matching Fryette cabs are mandatory to be paired with their heads to sound like they should....celestions are not that good with these amps(actually to ME they sound quite bad, in these amps of course)..
Also they take boosts pretty nicely, in case you need saturation :)

It's odd, as many times as I've heard the "dry" comment, I never understood it.
When I got my first Ultralead years ago I thought it had been modded because it was so gainy and yes, saturated!
I do boost the front end however but that goes for any high gainer to some extent and I pick really hard, digging in for palm mutes..

Do people mean dry as in that the gain is clear, not grainy like most other amps?
Not being a smart ass here, can someone detail this for me?

I know his power amps are untouchable. They are far and away the best I've ever heard.

If Fryette voiced my old UL's channel 3 like channel 2 but boosted up, that amp would have kicked ass imo. But ch 3 was voiced for leads and more "smeared" with less note separation. The graphic EQ couldn't clean up the note separation on channel 3 (at least my 2003) so I never used it.

I loved channel 2 with a boost pedal up front, wished that was channel 3. Other than that I enjoyed the amplifier.

I think it's at least partially because the saturation is very clear, lacking any fizziness or sizzle on the top end.

The D60 with matching D412 is one of my all-time favorite rigs.

Yeah, an ultra lead matched with a VHT 4x12 loaded with P50Es

My buddy had his UL sounding great through a Mesa 4x12 (V30s) as well.

Loo what? VHTS muddy and not cutting through? Worse tone of true night? LOL OK..... Are we really talking about vht with comments like that? Vht is far and away the best live amp I've ever used bar none end of story...
