That has to be the coolest Marshall cab I've ever seen. I think I can smell it through my computer.

Thanks brother ;) It smells like tobacco smoke, I can tell you that. It was the house cab at some blues joint in copenhagen for 20 years or so. the last 10 it's been used in a recording studio, and now it's mine. It came to the country with some rock band in the start 70's that decided never to go back to the UK again haha. I'v never heard a cab like this before.. it has the best pre roles i'v ever heard. Speakers we never changed or even moved from the cab... factory solderings and all. I think ill just see to that no-one ever messes with it.

and a family pic of marshalls and clones - from left to right is a '68 clone, 74 50 watt on a 76 cab, 72, 87 JCM 800, Silver jubilee, 18 watt clone. Not pictured is a '70 100 watt, sold the jubilee.

Wow some great looking amps here!!! That 60's 50w smallbox earlier, so sexy.

stratotone, why didn't u like the jubilee? I never played one myself...

Jofipe - it was an ok amp, I think overall they are hyped a little bit. My 72 crushes it. :D

My '77jmp that i had gone through and put back to original spec, and put kt88's in it. Just crushin for a 50watt amp. I run it hard with the master wide open and it makes me smile every time. This amp taught me to respect power tube grind. Dont think i will eer go back to high gainers.

Thanks - it was actually covered in purple tolex when I got it, but I removed it all since it wasn't original and a bit messy. I think there are pictures of it on amparchives.

Out of curiosity, what was done to your '72? Were you able to source all the correct parts? Those square .022uf philips caps that '72s usually have are pretty difficult to find.

None of those 50 watts I posted were in great shape when I got them. The '69 needed a new output transformer, the '75 was missing both transformers and had some incorrect parts on the board, and the '76 was converted to a bad sounding 2204 circuit. All ended up being great sounding amps though.

Was that one a 2553? I have one, and I can't make my mind up about it. Definitely a bit hyped though.

There's just something about a stock old Marshall i can't resist. Somehow every piece is unique and tells a story.
This 1972 50w head is a recent purchase.. it had a few mods, but no holes. So i spend a bit of time sourcing out all the NOS original components I needed, and i put it back to '72 original spec.. (with great help from the metro forum) It sounds incredible! Especially through this '68 cab with g12m's

I added a Lar/Mar PPIMV just to check it out, and the amp rips. It's definitely a very raw and unrefined tone which is super angry yet very old school... love it. By no means modern haha. I know this threat is about stock Marshalls, so ill have it converted back asap ;)

Post your old Marshall rigs! :D

Holy smokes that is nice! Do you have a high res version of this? I want to make it my background.

If you get a 2203 you dont have to run it wide open.

I had a 2204 and my 100 watt JMP's blow it away ...

Got to looking at your '68 cab - why does it have corner protectors and no slots up top for the piping?

True but i dont use alot of gain. And the jmp is about bearable at this volume. I sold my 2203 cause it was just too loud to get my power amp where i wanted it. Something about having the power section on this one full up and bringing my pre up to band volume..

The difference is about 2,5 dB.

Not much. My 2204 wasn't noticeable less loud

Looked kinda like they were on there. Here's a pic of a vintage marshall cab stripped - I just didn't see the piping slots up top on your cab. Does it have them?

I can see that :) a 2204 with KT-88's must sound huge. I sold a 78' 2203 with 6550's earlier this year because it was brutally LOUD, just crushing, needed alot of room to run. Too much for my needs.

My Friedman KS JMP has resistors across the MV that tame the headroom. With EL-34's the sweet spot is between 4 & 5 on the master, acts alot like a 50 watt. After 5 she goes back to full blown 2203.
