I came across one of the strangest rigs i had seen ever but it sounded so damn good. I was at a show in St. Louis and seeing a local band called broken tooth and i was floored by his guitar tone. Especially with the cheap equipment he used. He had normal effects chain which at the very end had a Lehle 2 way splitter one split went to a mxr stereo chorus pedal and the other went straight to an amp. He had 3 amps one was a cheap Crate gx120c with ran to a single 1x18 Bass cab (yes a 1x18 bass cab), then he had two peavey valve kings both went to some marshall 4x12 cabs (not sure what model). One output of chorus pedal went to one valve king on input 1 and the other Chorus pedal went to the crate, and the 3rd out output was straight to valve king no chorus pedal on input 2. The crate was almost clean barely any dirt and only had bass on 4 treble and mids were 0. both valve kings bass were on 2 mids 8 and treble 6. He said the valve kings had no low range but great mids and decent treble. He said the crate and one valve king with the chorus and one valve king without chorus gives him a massive out of phase sound. But back in the normal effects pedal chain before the LEHEL he had at the very beginning a EQ pedal with all treble bands maxed with a tad bit of gain boost followed by a LPB1 boost pedal about 7 - 8 o'clock. he said the eq, lpb1 and the chorus are always on. The best thing here was it sounded like a different guitar completely depending on where he was on the finger board, his palm mutes were almost like there were cancelled but still made strange ghostly mutes ( hard to explain ) and his harmonics were so rich. Probably the best comparison is the Aenima tone of Adam Jones of tool but this guys was not dark at all like Jones it was so rich but had a shimmering haunting overtone of Bass that just hung in the air. And the mids were devastating, i could not believe what sound was comming out of this rig he said he got all three amps off Ebay for less than 800$
I am wondering if anyone has any experience running solid state with tube amps together. Also if someone can give me some pointers for Bi or tri amping i am wanting to give this a go. I have one JCM 800 going to a mesa 4x12 cab im wanting to get a 2nd JCM 800 and another 4x12 mesa and i am thinking of getting a cheap solid state head and running to a 1x15 or 1x18 cab or possibly a mesa 2x15 cab.
