I need to score some new monitors and want to get some input on what to look at.

Depends on your use. If you're mixing, NS-10's are pretty damn honest and will help you shape your low / low-mid quite nicely. They fall a little short in the high end.

If you want something really crisp and revealing, the Adam A7's are awesome. Great for mixing and just every day listening. You might want to add a sub though as I find they fall a little short in the bottom end.

I switch between both but would pick the A7's any day. For the price range I think they're one of the best sets out there. I've tried many others but they didn't do it for me. I even have Genelecs at work (8020a's) but find they're too boomy, and when you dip the low end one notch you lose too much.

I don't know if I've been much help lol....

I need a good set for just all around purposes. Tracking, editing, mixing, and just listening to music. I don't really record bands at this point, but I produce my own bands material as it saves us money and our label money.

I would say the A7's then. They're powered and and even fun to jam through. Crystal clear and articulate.

Check out the KRK line. Sound damn good & are pretty cost effective. I beat the crap out of mine & never had any issues.

We're using the Tannoy Precision 8's, and are very happy with them.

I believe the NS-10 is good for a reality check playback, but wouldn't want to rely on them alone.

The bottom line is that all monitoring systems are simply a point of reference used in an effort to create something that can be played on a broad range of playback systems, and sound good. This can be done with a set of full range stereo speakers, by somebody with good ears and mixing judgement, but it's not ideal.

If not careful, the NS-10 will leave you with a lackluster top end and missing bottom end. There's certainly a reason why they're found in so many high end mixing studios, but you would be hard pressed to find them being used as the primary reference system. In the end, the story goes that if the mix sounds good through NS-10's, it should sound good through anything. :D

KRK RP series do a good job of finding a middle point between shit home stereos and flat studio monitors. Bottom line is they are affordable and mixes translate very well.

I hate NS-10's. Not because they are supposedly honest, which they are not imo, they sound like crapola :-) I have a hard time referecing anything on those crappy speakers.

Depending on your budget, Adam A7's are a nice cost effective solution. I also am a fan of the KRK V series, get the newer ones, V8 preferably. Dynaudio's are also nice mid entry level monitor. I don't think you can go wrong with either of those 3. IF your budget is higher, then we can talk about some others such as Focals..

Jens Bogren highly recommended the following:

"However, if i would recommend you a completely non-flattering monitor that will get the job done almost for free, it would be KRK V8 series 1."

Stay away from Alesis or Maudio stuff....I use KRK V8 series and love them....JBL's are excellent too!

Yeah dude I learned my lesson. Using the Maudio's now and I am not happy at all. Granted my room needs treatment also, but I can't do that until I am in the house I plan on living in pretty much permanently. I think I am gonna give those KRK V8 series a try.

This might be personal, but I find having a killer pair of Headphones great as well. I have Beyner Acoustic headphones(not sure the model)....DT770 pros(found it)....When mixing, going between headphones and monitors also find balance cuz I do not use subs.

Yup...Research what the trusted reviewers are saying, be careful of the magazine payed-off fluff reviews.
Who's winning the real awards?...usually means something.
From my experience, the Tannoy Reveals are great, my friends Adam A7 sounds great.
No speaker is perfect, you need to spend a lot of time getting used to them, once you are familiar with their flaws and strengths you know what to expect when working on them and you feel comfortable. I'm not comfortable on anyone else's speakers, no matter how good they are.
I'm so used to the Tannoy Reveals, I'll be sticking with them probably for life. But I could see someone else saying they like the Adam A7 the best...just preference.

But the V8s are no longer produced, are they? What's the equivalent current model?
