If I just wanna hear the kt88 vs 6550 vs el34... can I just put one pair at a time without any harm to the amp...if so, do I leave it at 8 ohms ?? (for a 8 ohm cab)

Btw, friday or saturday is NCD

Cheers!

I take it you're working with a Herbert?

Seems like a lot of work with regards to re-biasing every time a tube swap occurs. What I can tell you is I've used all of these tubes... I used them in a VH4, VH4S and an Uberschall Rev.Blue and a TJ.

EL34's - classic beautiful rich overdrive and that vintage grunt that just can't be beat. Brilliant and very common - it's the sound that makes ya grow a rubbery one when you hear it loud

6550's - powerful, crisp, great low end, great high end, great articulation throughout. Very potent and loud, and smooth overdrive and no bumps in the sonic spectrum. I have these currently in my VH4S and they're outputting more than 6L6's or EL34's. They're bloody loud and knock you on yer ass.

KT88's - in my Uberschall, after having EL34's in them - KT88's in this application are the bomb... Kind of a melding between 6550's surgical crispness and the warmth and tone of the EL34. Great output, great clarity, and a really beautiful overdrive that's....in one word....RICH.

Hope this helps!

Yeah it's with HERBIE. this summer I've tried a few combinations.... my preference was mostly towards kt88...but I wanna be sure before ordering two other pairs, so I can run one pair alone?

BTW: I'm not to sure I like 6550s.... as I dislike most amps with 6L6 (except slo 100??)

Little OT:

Ventura: how kt88 sound in VH4? are they reliable as El34?

p.s. @stefvorcide: leave it at 8 Ohm.

Quite honestly I don't know, or perhaps better, don't recall... Let's just say if they were anything of notable mention, I'd remember. EL34's OTOH, were excellent in my V's. I was actually somewhat antsy about going the 6550 route with my new V... However, after getting it - and really taking my time to learn its sonic nuances - and then TURNING IT UP, I really fell in love with the 6550's. So - all I can tell you is I love KT88's in my Uberschall, and I love 6550's followed by EL34's in my VH4S.

Hope this makes sense.

First of all, even if it were safe, it wouldn't give you idea of the sound differences. For instance 4 KT88s sound hellofalot different then 2, at least to my ear. Second, I don't think it's safe.
