so i just bought a used tremoverb and got it today on ups. so far it sounds great, but the reverb doesnt seem to work. It did not come with a footswitch, so i'm wondering if it needs the footswitch plugged in to turn it on? There is no switch for it on the amp, only knobs.

I've checked the reverb tank wires, and all the preamp tubes are glowing like they're supposed to.

I've never had a tremoverb but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't need to have the footswitch plugged in to make the reverb work. You don't on my mark III, just turn up the pot. See if the wires coming from the reverb tank are plugged in to the chasis. Maybe the previous owner didn't use reverb and unplugged them.

yes, they are plugged in, and plugged in correctly according to the diagram in the manual. I can hear the springs shake in the tank also, so i know the springs are connected. I also tried swapping some of the preamp tubes around to see if that helped, but nothing. :aww:

I had a Tverb from the mid 90's to early 2000's. The only footswitch that I had for it was a single button that changed channels. I really wish it came with a switch with more options. That doesn't really help you though. Sorry.

Yeah I know the footswitch can be used for different things, depending on which jack you plug it into. What I'm thinking is, maybe the previous owner had a footswitch plugged into the reverb jack, and switched it off, and then unplugged it. Would that leave it off? If I had a spare switch laying around to try it with, I would.

It's been so long that I don't even remember being able to use a separate footswitch. Sounds like that could be the issue. Maybe call Mesa tomorrow when they are open or post something on their forum. I am sure that you already knew that however. I get used to getting immediate answers here and frequently take the lazy route. Actually, I pretty much always take the lazy route and just ask here.

Use the switch you're using to switch the channels and see if it turns it on.

I had a t-Verb and you definetly do NOT need the footswitch to work the reverb.

A foot-switch does not have to be plugged in. Whenever I'm too lazy to use my pedal-board at home, the knobs on the front can fully operate the reverb.

thats the way i figured it should be. but now i'm just lost. :aww: I posted this on the boogie board as well, so maybe they can help...

Use the channel switching footswitch. It will work for the reverb, tremolo, loop on/off, or channel. It uses the same type of switch for all the functions. Try that.

You might have a bad reverb tube (V5 - page 15 in the T-verb manual). No, you don't need a footswitch to turn on reverb. If the V5 reverb tube doesn't fix the problem, it's also possible you could have a bad relay/LDR that switches reverb on/off from the exterior 1/4" jack.

If the amp uses one of these:

I wouldn't be surprised if it went bad. I've replaced several over the years in various kinds of amps.

On the footswitch note, you may need one of these:

Twice I've almost ordered one of his switches, but the bad press & un-reliable service has scared me off. Is that your switch?...... (I still lust for one!)

I dont think you guys are understanding me. I don't have a footswitch at all. Not for switching channels or anything else. The only footswitch I have is for a peavey XXL and thats a totally different type of switch.

I guess tonight I will try taking the tank completely out to see if anything is broken. Is there any way to test a reverb tank?

Make sure all the springs are connected. If one spring is disconnected it won't work.

No sir...I've been on the edge of ordering one a few times as well, although you can just chalk up my not ordering one to indecisiveness, rather than his bad press...didn't know how well his business was running. The pic was just off his website.
