Hey guys. I own a suhr modern frost and i really love the guitar. In fact its the best playing guitar i have ever owned. I want to get a bit more power through my rig "friedman small box". I find the ssh+ super versatile but it is on the bright side. Are the aldrich pickups great in the modern or are they designed for les paul guitars? I will also be switching from standard tuning down to e flat because it just seems to work best with marshal style amps.

I have both in my Moderns. IMO, the SSH+ is the better pickup overall. I think the Aldrich pickups are equally bright with less bass, while being hotter/more saturation. I've never had an LP with Aldrich pickups, but I would assume I'd prefer the Aldrichs better with it. Don't get me wrong, I do like them in my Modern with basswood body/flame maple top/roasted maple neck, but I feel like the SSH+ pickups are slightly more dynamic. Others might have opposing views.

yeah im wondering if i just still with the ssh+ and just use my koko for just a bit more. Since down tuning my guitar a half step everything has just come together for me so perfectly. I was also thinking holy divers but i am trying to keep it as stock as possible. would love to hear from other who have had both in a suhr modern.

I'll add one more thing...the Aldrich pickups on my Modern are more focused as well, where as the SSH+ isn't as compressed. This of course makes the Aldrichs great for blazing leads.

This is a pretty good representation of Aldrichs to me:

I would contact suhr and ask them. I think the SSH+ and Aldrich are pretty much polar opposites in terms of hotness, there may be something in the middle that will suit what you want.

I have an Aldrich set in one les paul and a thornbucker set in another les paul. Both are great sets of pickups, but never tried either in another style of guitar.

I have read that the aldrich is essentially a 10% over wind of the ssh+... I cant see how they would be total opposites. I am just wondering if is a darker pickup.

Actually I think they are about the same heat maybe a slight bit less on the SSH+ (you maybe thinking of SSV+) I think I've read they are the same pickup just different magnet or something like that.

Edit: mniel8195 you are correct about Aldrich being overwound, I remember reading that as well I think Aldrich is 18K and SSH is 17K. Both extremely hot pickups.

I was thinking of the ssv. Just goes to show that suhr needs a hotness chart like Seymour Duncan has.

bonded with the Aldrich, but that SSH + did not like and yanked it from my Suhr Strat in favor of a WCR Darkburst.

The SSH+ was one of the worst sounding pickups when recording and listening to the playback. Just my opinion though.

The Aldrich, per John Suhr, is a 10% overwound SSH+. This equates to a little hotter more compressed tone.

I have both pups in two very different guitars: Aldrich in an LP and the SSH+ in a super-strat. I don't find either of them to be VERY high output amplifier-slamming pickups. A good quality.

Out of curiosity, what DO you find to be a VERY high output pickup???

Wondering about these pups myself. Any idea how the output compares to the similarly spec'd Duncan JB?

I like the Aldrich more than the JB. To me, the Aldrich has a tighter bottom end and is more even across lows/mids/highs. Some guys may steer clear of the Aldrich because of its high output, but I find it cleans up incredibly well and can almost give you a PAF kind of vibe when you roll off the volume.

I've got an Aldrich in the bridge of my Performance super strat. Here's a clip I made with that guitar last month.

The guitar's volume is rolled off almost half way throughout the clip.

+1 to rolling off the volume. It cleans up better than most pickups with equal output.

I have a few of both pickups. I like them equally... Aldrich has a little more compression and mid range along with aggression. SSH+ is more well rounded. I cant be forced to choose one over the other.
