Suhr Modern Satin/mahogany body

Anyone played these? Compare to Alder Basswood etc? I know on paper mahogany is supposed to be thicker darker tone. But I have seen lots of variation across SG's, LP's, Melody Makers, etc.

They look like a rest guitar to buy one in red and then do custom paint on.

Tone and quality is the question.

I have a mahogany satin modern.

I sounds fat, warm & dark, but the pickups make it cut through, so you get the best of both worlds. A warm, thick guitar tone that cuts through the mix.

I loved this guitar so much I just ordered a basswood pro modern in Bengal Burst.

Suhr, makes, hands down, the best production, off the shelf type guitars today.

I have one and it sounds great. I thought I'd would swap out the stock SSH+ for an Aldrich, but the guitar sounds so good with the stock pickups I don't think I'll touch it. All 3 of my moderns are mahogany so I can't really compare to a basswood Suhr.

The finish is NOT smooth. It has a very thin layer of satin over it, but you can feel the wood. There are little grooves and whatnot that you can feel on the body and the neck. At first I was a bit bothered compared to my Custom Modern neck, but I don't even notice it now.

Not a satin owner but, I do have 2 moderns. A basswood/maple cap with a all maple neck and an all mahogany modern with maple cap and rosewood board.

I would say that Mahogany one is exactly what you described thick dark full yet cutting. Basswood one is similar. Still thick sounding but snappy-er/brighter, more refined maybe? John says his basswood/maple body is the most LP sounding. I don't agree it can sound very very LPish but IMHO the all mahogany modern nails LP tone (at least mine does).
 
Sorry for hijacking the topic, but how would you describe the differences between mahogany modern with maple cap vs. basswood/maple cap, especially for 80's stuff and soloing and a little modern metal without any drop? Thanks.
 
the ssh+ stock humbucker is AWESOME!! really great pickup, especially for rock/hard rock, 80s, etc. very punchy and articulate. love it!!
 
Great to hear about Mahogany being Darker, Fatter on the Suhrs.

Was not aware these were under $2000.

I wonder if his Set Necks go even further...

Are these Moderns available as 22 Fret H-S-H , H-S-S etc.?
 
The maple cap on the swamp ash had a great balance. There was the same depth, just had the sizzle in top.

I played 5 and bought this one.

The solid alder root beer drip models looked awesome, just didn't have the same bite. If I didn't have the other Suhr models to play, I would barely notice,

The way Suhr does the sort of mellow effect tone control, it is easy to dial back the top end sizzle and get the mellowed bit the alder body had. I would rather have the extra cut on tap and be able to dial it back, than not have it at all. Different strokes....

The SSH+ pickups are pretty good. The neck pup is sweet.

I am a Suhr fan though. Got the tele too. Just consistent quality guitars.
