Suhr or Seymour Duncan?

Years ago, I used JBs in most of my guitars until I eventually moved on to the Custom, which I felt gave me a more balanced and more defined tone than the JB. A bit later on, I went to Aldrich pickups, which definitely offered more clarity than the Duncans. Yes, the Aldrich is pretty hot, but I found it sounded great with the guitar's volume rolled off a bit.

I've recently moved to the SSV+ and Thornbuckers in some of my guitars, and I can't say enough good things about these pickups. I've tried a few other Duncans along the way, including the Custom/59 hybrid and the Custom Shop 78, but I never liked any of them as much as the Suhr stuff.
Been using the JB myself every now and then since the mid 80's and from what many of you guys recommend it seems like the Custom is a killer. Have you tried the Suhr DSV+?

Suhr ThornBucker

Beat me to it.

I usually run Duncan Alnico II Pros, that pickup delivers in every guitar I put them in, so I put them in most guitars I have. I have a Suhr modern satin that is loaded with a Thornbucker+, V60LP, Thornbucker combination and it has had me looking at Thornbuckers for upgrades in anything new I get, helps that everything I'm looking at is a Suhr right now. In any case, they are another instance of mid-output pickup delivering. Very un-compressed natural sounding pickups with great bite and note definition/articulation. To me they just have that raw, angry character when distorted but still have a vintage feel and when clean they ring like a bell very clear honest tone. I really dig them.

I've never tried any DSV pickups, so I can't offer any input there. If your Modern sounds a bit thin with the current pickup, my recommendation would be to try an SSH+ or an Aldrich. Or the Duncan Custom if you want to go with SD pickups.

The Saturday Night Specials are the best pickups I’ve tried during my +27 years as a session guitarist. I have them on my Les Paul and on my American Fender Stratocaster HSS Deluxe (alder body) and I’ve never heard a tone that fat. With my Les Paul I nail Jimmy Page, Malcom Young and Doug Rappoport using my Friedman Smallbox. And when using my Suhr Koko Boost in front of the amp I even nail Jerry Cantrell. It’s a really versatile pickup.

Hmmm. Never thought of the Saturday Night Specials before. I have been kicking around the idea of swapping out the BB3 in the bridge of my LP.

Seems like the Thornbucker getting lots of votes here. Maybe I should try them out then.

I know that I am in the minority, but I didn't care for the Thornbuckers at all. Tonally, I thought they were great, but they do not push an amp at all. I found that they were too uncompressed and I fought with them.

And that’s the way I want it. Great tonality and as uncompressed as possible. I will most definitely check them out. Maybe even the Thornbucker+
