Sunn was kinda trash decades ago. Because they were cheap and available at the time, poor stoners started using them in rock bands. They had a unique sound to them that became iconic. They became collectable, because they became rare. Now, the reissue stuff is trying to capitalize on the price of rare, collectable gear without taking into account that it became popular in the first place because it was cheap and available.
Beta Leads and Model Ts sound great, but anyone who's ever owned one has had issues keeping them going. That's what any bands that uses them for their sound has had a stack of backups with them. Hell, the band Sunn0))) turned it into a gimmick.
My take is this: If it's a boutique clone (Hillbish, Winter, Verellen, etc.), spend the money. You get the sound of the OG and the quality if the brand. If it's the cheap original stuff, proceed with caution.
I do want to know if the new mini Beta is legit though. My buddy is talking about getting one as a backup for his Beta Lead.
