Well, if Ed ever considered working with Sammy again, this book will probably stop that.
Best news. Ever.

Sammy just never could get over playing second-fiddle to Dave in VH. He could never come to grips with the fact that no matter how hard he tried, VH with Dave sold more records, made more money and would always be more in demand than anything he ever did.

Ed's definitely got some serious problems, but Sammy's ego is just as out-of-control.

I dunno man every Van Halen album with Hagar on it went to #1 compared to Zero #1's with DLR

They also had more actual Hits with Hagar..

Not debating the actual sold numbers because with DLR they released 6 albums with an 8 year head start Compared to just 4 with Hagar.

I hear what your saying about the #1's but Van Hagar wasn't going up against Michael Jackson's Thriller album for the #1 spot. I think the success of the 1984 album is what made it easier for the Van Hagar records to hit #1, 1984 was huge and I think the only thing bigger was Thriller at the time and the Police Synchronisity.

If you had to work with Eddie for 20 years I'm sure people would say the same about you. I couldn't take being in the same room with coked up assholes i knew for more than 2 minutes. Imagine having to put up with Eddie's shit day in and day out. I'm sure his star appeal would wear out quick.

1984 sold 10 million copies but are you forgetting Born In The USA by Bruce and Purple Rain by Prince? Both were and still are much bigger albums than 1984. And of course, there's Thriller.

I really don't think Sammy has anything to be jealous about. He's very successful and not just music either. I've seen him before, during, and after Van Halen. I liked him in Van Halen. But, I liked DLR too. Just different.

Every Show I've went to when Sammy performed has always been a good one. Always put on a good fun show. But then again, I've been a fan since since the Montrose days.

Don't get me wrong, I LIKE Sammy, and I'm FAR from one of the "Dave-or-the-Grave" crowd. I've seen Sam several times over the years both with and without Van Halen and I've also seen VH many times with Dave, and their tightest musical performance as a band was BY FAR on the Balance tour with Sammy, IMO. Sammy is also easily a much better pure singer than Dave is, but for the overwhelming majority of us who came up listening to the classic Dave material, it's virtually impossible to top!

Sammy has always had an ego problem with Dave, though. He's made comments here and there since the day he joined the band about Dave, and they really had some problems towards the end of the Sam & Dave tour, and Sammy really does come off to me as not understanding why, in spite of his own success with Van Halen, MOST people prefer the band with Dave, and not being real happy about it.

But yeah, who wouldn't trade places with Sammy if they could? I'm guessing it doesn't exactly suck to be him these days, either!

Sammy was awesome....but Dave was MAGIC. DLR didn't need to be on key or even need to remember the words. Live he was magic. He was the EVH of frontmen. He had a presence. He had "it" He didn't need the rest. He is probably a better singer now than he was then.

All has changed trust me. He has been sober 2 years now and is just ripping on the guitar. He is a different guy now. I was around for the time in that article and it was a dark sad time. Thankfully it is gone.
Sure. For the time being...

I hope it sticks this time, but I've seen this movie before...

I would never condone Ed's (or any other hard drug users) actions or behavior. Actually reading about Ed turned my stomach.
I was referring to Sammy's 8th grade lyrics and just overall douchebaggery. And the fact that I really don't like him as an entertainer. Maybe he's the coolest motherfucker alive :dunno:

I hope he gets away from the meth/cocaine. If anyone thinks he is not going to drink cold beer you might as well believe he`s gonna quit smoking.

If EVH wants to have any semblance of a life, he CANNOT drink anymore. It's clear the alcohol leads him to the other party favors that lead to the behavior Hagar chronicled...

The cigs are gonna kill him prematurely for sure... It's a shame...

Sammy seems to be the type who wants to be recognized for having a party-time image and Eddie seems to enjoy partying without anybody caring about it. I can recall many shows and radio interviews where Sammy talked about his Tequilla business, his references to partying, etc. Hell, in concerts, he always told the crowd he was gonna "go back stage, kick back a few beers, and listen to the greatest guitarist in the world" (during ed's solo spot).
Yeah, it seems sammy talks up the whole party guy image but in reality is anything but. Its just talk in his attempt to be the next jimmy buffet type an make a boatload of cash from yuppies and lushes. Evh has the "what u see is what u get" attitude.

Funny, how everyone is talking about Sammy being a douche. I watched one of those videos of the Sammy and Dave tour. Dave is the one who's the douche. God that guy gets under my skin. And, I've seen Van Halen 4 times with Dave. The last being 1984 tour. Man, what a roll down hill for Dave. By 1984 he was sucking bigtime. Singing half the words and stuff. Being my favorite band, it was a huge disapointment to me. And, you could tell on stage there was just tension. Unlike the early days whe nit was just rock and rol mayhem.

Look, those first few albums were legendary. There's always going to be comparisons. I mean VH 1 is my favorite albums OF ALL TIMES. But, you can't discount the stuff that Sammy did with them. In fact, it's amazing they were able to make it work and be successful.....very successful. It wasn't going to be the same. Sammy doesn't sound like Dave nor are their styles even remotely close.

Personally, I like them both in their own right.
