Surviving Eddie

ooops, i thought diver down was their last good record, and that one was a pos too

I really liked Me Wise Magic and that other DLR tune.....EVH had a chance to return to glory at that point in the 90s but totally blew it (again).
yep--Can't Get This Stuff No More. P90s on that one with a talk box on the solo; Trans-Trem and a 9:8 riff on the other one. like he was time-warped back to 1986 or something, for just those two tunes. ah well.

Being that I've been a huge EVH fan (not ever Van Hagar though) for a long time, that was a bit of a depressing read. To be honest though, none of it is very surprising. Poor Ed just went down the worst possible path that he could have... and it's just led to where he is now. In my opinion, they should have just called it quits in 1985 and moved on... by then the spark couldn't possibly contain itself for much longer. FWIW, I actually sort of dug 5150, but I did find it to lack that specific thing that made it Van Halen... it was just more of a generic sounding hard rock record (though a fairly commendable one at that.) Everything after that just continued to get worse and worse, leading up to the trainwreck that was VHIII...

I still think sam's comments are a cheap shhot against a guy who could certainly use some help and support. Think of the book roger daltry could write about Keith Moon, or Jagger about Richards, etc ...then again, these are paraphrased from Rolling Stone, a magazine with Snooki on the cover.

Like in your avatar. Guitar player says best guitar player in the world. I have always sort of disagreed with that.Even back then but I believe it went to Ed`s head.

i don't get all the hate for van hagar. f.u.c.k. is one of my favorite vh albums lol

I have to somewhat disagree. I think Eddie has some of it coming to him with the way he's done friends, family and band members like he has over the years. The crap he pulled on Michael Anthony at the end, somewhat forcing him out of the band so "Wolfie" could get some recognition was unacceptable in my book.

Good chance what's really in that book could answer many, many questions about what really went wrong with Van Halen.

That really made me laugh. What else does Eddie need? Played music for a living, didn't have to work his ass off on a hard job, made millions, but he needs help and support? You can lead a horse to the watering hole 99 times, if he doesn't drink and you bring him for 100, you're the idiot. If a guy is convinced he's not a drunk or drug addict and has an attitude that blames everyone else, then fuck em.

He obviously didn't give a shit about going on stage drunk and high and putting on a crap performance, the fans that supported him should get their money back.

To hear some say that their last good album was 1984 makes me go

I think that Eddie's playing really matured and was a bit more 'polished' in the Hagar era. He actually played the songs live as they were recorded. He was also limited with what Roth could actually sing. I love old VH but with Sammy he really expanded his writing imo. I've seen Sammy doing his solo thing quite a few times and I must say that he is an awesome performer and puts on a great show. Just a very fun and cool dude

I also really dig the Chickenfoot stuff. People that dog it never really 'listen' to it..or get 'it'. It's everything that VH wishes they could be...but are not, and probably never will be unfortunately

I am a self-admitted EVH wanna be. He is and always will be my guitar hero and main influence. I really hope that Vh can put out some good material without the same old tired riffs. But given his age, the years of alcohol and drug abuse, and the fact that he's more into selling his EVH stuff than actually playing and writing music, I'm not expecting much :(

Maybe Eddie has some tigers blood in his veins, therefore...WINNING! ;)

Reading this crap makes me think of tiger's blood and Adonis DNA.

WINNING!

I really think the first 4 albums are great. After that not so much. The occasional diamond in the rough here and there.

Saying that, EVH is the greatest rock guitarist to ever live.

Oh man, you and I really see this differently.

Yeah. I get your point. I have no doubt that Ed is a creep. My dad is dying from liver cirhossis(sp?). He's been a loser for a long time and threw away a career as a drummer. I have recently given up drinking. That being said, I haven't felt the need to write a book so I can make money and further expose someone. Again, rolling stone is obviously paraphrasing the controversial parts of the book. I still think of it as a kind of sour grapes position from Sammy.

i was there that day. wow.

but i still think they could put one more good album together if eddie worked really hard.
but i won't be going to the tour regardless.

+1

Add people who post on internet guitar forums. I hate those twits too.

is that video supposed to show how bad of shape he was in, because it certainly did

Ed has def been thru ups and downs. Be glad someone doesn't record every move YOU make ( like this last vid ) . His best music was made with Roth. Sammy changed the style of the band for the worse. Even though I think Sammy is one hell of a talented singer.

Good luck ED and Dave !! Everybody Wants Some !!

Age has nothing to do with it bro and you know that, guys here are slowly approaching 50 and can still burn with the best of them bar none. You know this is true.

I do like stuff past 1984, love Balance and the tone Ed had.

I am going through an EVH rebirth myself, listening hard to his early stuff and trying to cope some of his vibe but today he is dead to me. I would not give him a buck to see him live. I was at the Live Without a Net DVD show and that was awesome, so "ON" that night and smiling his ass off the whole show.

Japanese Samuri Ed with the sustainer on is not what I want to see.

All has changed trust me. He has been sober 2 years now and is just ripping on the guitar. He is a different guy now. I was around for the time in that article and it was a dark sad time. Thankfully it is gone.
