This was a project I was working on that I hadn’t intended much hope sonically but it came out great.
Typically you hear a lot about adding a FET boost to the front of amps to goose them more, but I find that changes the core tone of the amp too much and forces the amp to sound artificial in a negative way. Adding a tube gain stage can be a hassle dealing with heater filaments and additional microphonics when involving so many stages without completely revoicing the amplifier.
I’ve designed and built 5 total gain stages for Abaddon with no extra tubes necessary, and the first gain stage is still all analog just as it should be. The added benefit is that you can switch from 4/5 stages quite easily.
This won’t be standalone but rather hopefully an option that can be chosen if desired.
