I have a working theory that the no-reverb Mark IIs and IIIs are tonally superior.

I agree, in as much as I always disconnect the reverb connections. Sounds better to my ears.

They are. I had many Mark series amps over the years and I’ve always felt they have more “tone”... I had a Mark III++ coliseum without reverb and a Mark III red stripe and both sounds better than other ones with reverb. Shutting off the reverb knob or disconnecting the reverb tank isnt the same either. The reverb has an additional transformer along with a tube. I remember chatting with Steve K and him wanting to send a 2C+ to boogie to have the reverb completely removed from an amp... all parts, circuitry, etc.

All of that said Mike B felt that the reverb amps had more gain since the reverb tube added to the signal. Either way, I’d take a Mark series amps with no reverb over one with reverb 100% of the time.

Well the robot voice is never wrong.

And hell I got Sykes fingers....,(Won em in a auction)

Tone seems the same?

So that myth is debunked.

This pic is horrible. I can tell it’s real too. Poor man...

The ones with reverb do have more gain. I was going to have Mike remove the reverb from one of mine, and he said it wasn’t worth it. Just told me to unplug the tank. Tonal difference with vs without... maybe. But I always like more gain.

:dunno:

When my Coli was being upgraded I also asked him about the reverb totally out or disconnected, and he said the same. Also mentioned that guys will request him to totally remove it from the circuit. He always talks them out of it..or tries.

I once got Coli from swimming at Wet n' Wild. Wash your ass, people!

We were screwing around with a "Sykes" type setup using my IIC+ and a power station check out the clip:

Also I remember reading that Metallica pulled the Reverb tanks out of their IIC+'s during the recording of Master of Puppets, they sort of made a joke about it and put the tanks on the producers desk.

Love the "Billy" riffing and solo. Such a phenomenal album.

I'm still happy with my shitty old IIC+/++ Coliseum tones.

i had one of the cabs Ric St Pierre from wizard made for him in the 80's.
it had a piano black, gloss paint job instead of tolex, had the old hiwatt style angled "the other way" baffle, and other than that, looked pretty primative. totally sealed on the back, and front loaded, no casters, weighed 100lbs+ easy.
g12-65 loaded. yeah...i'm an idoit for getting rid of it.

pics or it didn't happen....
