Well I might be late to the party but Im betting that Drew knew that I would comment in this thread eventually :D !  John Sykes is one of my favorite guitar players of all time...Period. In my eyes he has it all ......killer phrasing, leads, vibrato, tone, rhythm and song writing chops from hell....etc etc. I could go on for days about him but I wont LMAO.

+1

he was to whitesnake what eddie was to van halen

Great clip.

What kills me is, in a recent Eddie Trunk interview on Sirius, he claims he uses a 57 classic in the bridge, has no idea whats in the neck and plugs STRAIGHT into stock 50 watt JCM800's with no pedals.

How the hell does he get all that gain and compression that way? I have been playing the exact same setup for years and cant get anywhere close without an OD pedal in front.

Sykes has been using Jose modded Marshalls since the mid 80's, no way is that tone from a stock Marshall :D

Been on a Sykes bender and I just can't get Cold Sweat out of my head. The video of TL playing live in Tx in 04 just makes Gorham's tone embarrassing! His voice, tone and vibe is just unmatched!

Come on John bury the shit and do a Blue Murder album and tour!

The 57 Classic is what's in there now.He used to have a Gibson "Dirty Fingers" in it(which crapped out on him hence the pickup swap) in the glory days and that's how he got that gain and compression. The 57 just doesn't have the balls that the DF had.He has to use more preamp distortion these days and it just doesn't sound as good to me.I met John in 2003 when Lizzy played a small club here in New York and he is an awesome dude.I had a BLS shirt on and he stopped me to talk about Zakk.He gave me some picks too.He absolutely ripped that night.

Carmine has been saying in interviews that the Blue Murder reunion is in talks.

I am only recently getting into Sykes - I was only 2 years old in 1987, and I may be late to the Sykes in Whitesnake fan club, but damn he's good.
I just bought the first Blue Murder album as well and it's bloody amazing. Great player, and a surprisingly good singer. I was very impressed.

What did John have to say about Zakk?

I've been a Zakk fan since I first heard him BLS at Ozzfest '01 - again, wasn't yet playing and too young and too English to have really heard about him before. However the more I listen to Sykes, I notice things that sound very similar to Zakk, some the same. Or should I say Zakk sounds like Sykes.
I've just never really heard of Zakk mentioning Sykes in interviews.

He was saying that Zakk was his bud and that they were going to be hangingwith each other while working on on Derek Sherinian's solo album. He was saying he dug what Zakk was doing with BLS.

That's awesome.
And that God of War track they both played on was smoking. Suppose even though Zakk has a used a few Sykes style licks at times, they are still so easy to tell apart on the same track.

Flashback to 1989: Whitesnake's new album with Steve Vai came out and so did the Blue Murder album. Blue Murder destroyed Slip of the Tongue in every way possible. I still listen to the BM disc. I haven't listened to Slip of the Tongue since it came out.

Yep - I knew about the Dirty Fingers and he mentioned that too in the radio interview, but he did indeed say that his 50 watters were stock and that to me is just real hard to believe!

John Norum also claims to have used stock JCM800's on one of the recent Europe albums and once again....must be a JCM800 from a parallel universe, cause damned if I ever heard one that sounds like that!

if you are talking about the Trunk interview, John did mention that nowdays he does just plug straight into his Marshalls but Im not so sure that ever said that the amps were stock. I just remember John saying that he plugs straight into the amps and that's it ,but he did not go into detail about the amps being modded ;) As a matter of Fact I think he just stopped with the comment about him plugging straigh in lol. With that said Eddie is not the type of guy to ask John if the amps were modded. If a guitar player interviewed him I'm pretty sure they would have asked :D lol :D.That's all if I remember correctly!

With that said, those amps are not stock ;)

On the other hand Norum has used 2205 Jcm800 marshalls and those are capable of getting more distortion out of them even without a pedal. Even though that may be the case, I believe John likes kt88 tubes and if his amp are in fact running those tubes, his amps are not stock either ;)

John has several Jose Marshalls and he rotates as to which is his favorite. We've had several amps in his studio but we haven't come across anything he likes more than the Jose Marshalls.

+1, When John played in Sacramento years ago, he did a showcase at a local music store and openly talked about Jose modded Marshalls and how much he liked them. Yes he had his lp with him and back then it still had the DF pu. It sounded sooooo gooooood....

Sykes, Franklin and Appice =

WOW! Never heard of Sykes doing showcases, I would have been in heaven

That lineup (drummer and bassist) is the same lineup Coverdale used for the Whitesnake tour before their latest album. I have the DVD. It would be great to see Coverdale and Sykes and Aldrich on the same stage together but I think that level of awesome would cause the stage to explode.
