Boogie Mark III Coliseum heads on the 87 record and a Jose modded Marshall on some of the solos, such as 'Is This Love'

What amp did he use on "Still of the night"? I'd kill for that tone.

He used two Boogie Mark III Coliseums slaved together with a chorus in between them. Then he double tracked the rhythms--so you are hearing 4 amps.

drew has the sykes info LOCKED.
Tell John to fire up the mesas on the next record...that tone OWNED!

Flashback to 1989: Whitesnake's new album with Steve Vai came out and so did the Blue Murder album. Blue Murder destroyed Slip of the Tongue in every way possible. I still listen to the BM disc. I haven't listened to Slip of the Tongue since it came out.

+1

same with alcatrazz after yngwie

i did like what he did with eatum and smile but his songwriting and sense of melody is too buried in eqyptian dracula music

bad horsie was cool until he started to solo.

Name one guitarist that slid in behind Yngwie, EVH, and Sykes or had the balls to and we will speak fondly again. Ed dodged Yngwie like he had the clap cause he would have been swept away in a Swedish storm

Now slaving a bunch of Colis.................we can agree that is as metal as you could get :D

not saying it was a walk in the park to try to fill those shoes...just that he was a size 2 foot in a pair of shaq high tops :D

and yes ed seems to avoid eye contact with the swedish supernova, just as blackmore and perry did to him when he was the new kid in town and the old guard faced hero retirement.

back to sykes trivia, didn't he have some choice words for vivvy campbell when both were compared to gary moore?

Sykes owns plain and simple lol :D

I hated Steve Vai in Whitesnake . When I think of Whitesnake I think of the European guitar style with the killer wide Vibrato and Great tone and Vai didn't have either IMHO. I'm not shitting on Vai's shoes, I'm just saying that he was a bad choice for Whitesnake IMHO. I mean his is Vai for God's sake lol :D
I actually liked Steve with D.L. Roth because his sense of humor shined and it was a much better fit IMHO.

I'm not sure about the past but they've become friendly as Lizzy and Def Lep did several festivals together in the summer of '08 and the bands traveled together a few times.

i tink i may have listened to that whitesnake/slip album once the day i bought it...skipped around, hated it....and never listened again.

i wore out whitesnake with sykes and had to buy a second LP...same with the first 3 VH lps and the first alcatrazz lp and gary moore corridors of power. monsters!

I should have kept my mouth shut, I remember posting about Vai's Deeper the Love solo and got my ass handed to me by both coasts and several peeps from Europe

I agree 100% that he was the wrong choice, Vai could not duplicate Syke's destruction on the 87 album as John grips and rips while Vai is the technician without the raw intensity.

That said I will not back down about the Deeper the Love solo, that solo is so sexified that girls are still throwing vicki secret thongs after that barn burner

Of course in the vid it is 90% coverdale mugging in the camera

1987 rules. It doesn't get any more 80's metal than Sykes things on that album. Absolute killer. Cryin in the rain.

AND Slip of the tounge and Vai is brilliant in a totally different way. Humour was mentioned, thats exactly it. Listen to the rythm playing on Fool for your loving, I like the way that its so different from Sykes, super crisp and oh so good. I love WIngs of the storm as well.

Two different bands, two sounds, two great albums.

Great thread!

Here's some Sykes amp info:

For much of the Whitesnake '87 album and first Blue Murder album John used 2 Mesa Boogie Coliseum heads. These amps have a Mark III pre-amp section but use six 6L6 power tubes--giving the amps180 watts each! John also owns several Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+'s, Mark III's and some rack mounted Mesa Dual Recto heads. Other Mesa Boogie equipment includes a Tri-Axis preamp and a Strategy 500 Power Amp.

This was just pointed out to me. It's from Sykes 2004 mini tour of Japan.

I saw Sykes, Mendoza, and Aldridge do a TL gig right before this tour. They killed it. I talked to John after the show and he said he was using Jose Modded JCM800 1987s. Cool guy and a fucking blast to talk to.

edit: of course Gorham was there, too! :D

Kick ass ! Gawd I love that sound  Thanks for sharing !
