There is a difference.

Is a TS-9 "asymetrical" and a ZW-44 "symetrical" .... ?

Clipping ...

It's the other way around. The TS-9 has symmetrical clipping and the ZW-44 clips asymmetrically.

I always wondered for you guys with the ZW-44... how does it compare to the Boss SD-1?

Boss is too smooth.

ZW-44 hits harder.

SD-1 too smooth?

I guess i'm thinking of a DS-1 i had.

Bottom on Boss drive pedals can be a bit loose for my tastes.

The MXR has lower mids and a killer drive, been using it since 2005.

check the cusack screamer v2, its toggle selects between silicon, asymmetrical, and schottky, any of the 3 toggle selections are totally bitchin!

+1. I have one of those. Used all the time to either boost on it's own or to push a darker OD to brighten things up a bit.

The difference between a Boss SD-1 and the ZW-44? Well, every cool thing Zakk ever recorded was done on a Boss SD-1 so, you know, the math is pretty easy on this. Someone wanted to get paid.
