Hi guys,
I'm looking for an analog/hybrid system for studio use, and I'm torn between the Synergy SYN-20IR and the Fryette GPDI/IR.
My main concern is the tone and feel when using direct-out tones with IRs (i.e., not going into a real mic'd-up cab) but I can't find any A/B comparisons of their direct tones. From what I understand, the SYN-20IR has an emulated power amp section, while the GPDI/IR features a proper 1W power amp with an integrated reactive load which, on paper, should provide a more realistic experience.
I just don't know how much of a difference it makes in real-life applications, and whether it's enough to justify giving up the Synergy's versatility. I mostly lean toward Fryette modules anyway, but the SYN-20IR would also let me add more flavors.
Has anyone tried both who could help me decide?
Thanks a lot!

I’d get the synergy. Some of the new modules have a 0 watt power amp phase inverter thing that’s supposed to help with feel.

Main reason though is the variety. That system lets you play whatever amp you want easily.

Synergy for me just because of the variety and it sounds great!

I use the IR (XLR Out) from my Syn 2 with Tdlx and Freyette PB directly to the studio via snake from the tracking room. It sounds killer to me . . . .

A little late to this...

I have a GP/DI that I almost never user and a Syn20 / Syn2 that I use a lot.

The **only** reasons you should pick the GP/DI over the Syn20 are:

* You want the DI signal and a reamp input
* You want to save money
* You don't want to get into collector / choice paralysis
* You want a smaller form factor
* You really just want the Fryette sound (without the GEQ) and it won't haunt you to try more amps out.
* You only ever need one channel at a time (it has no switching or presets)

To me, Synergy should just put the first two features (DI and reamp) into their hardware. Otherwise the Syn20 just sounds better (to me), has more headroom, and has much more versatility. I don't have the Fryette modules, but I prefer most modules I have into the same power amp over the GPDI preamp.

So if you think there is any chance you would buy a Syn20 in the future, it's a no brainer to buy the pitbull and deliverance modules for cheaper than the GP/DI.
