Hey guys, assuming some PayPal issues resolve themselves in the next couple of days (they decided my credit card needed to go through some sort of reconfirmation process when I tried to pay for the damned thing after dozens of successful transactions), I'll be picking up my first ever Diezel product on Friday, the Herbert I've been dreaming of, and I'm chomping at the bit waiting to really test this thing out! Ever since I played one in a local store a month or two ago, it has been a near constant obsession. It looks like there is going to be a bit of a learning curve for me though as this is a far different beast than my existing amp setup a '68 Fender Bassman, I'm guessing amp technology has moved forward a fair amount in the last 40 years or so. This will be my first midi controlled amp, and really the first time I'll be using any sort of looping. I've seen another couple of threads recently about how/when to use the serial/parallel/switchable loops so I feel like I'm relatively up to speed on that. The midi switching though has me a bit intimidated, any chance any of you could advise me a little on what I'm looking for in selecting a midi switching device? The Columbus is an obvious possibility, I've also heard good things about the Ground Control Pro, and due to the thread listed below, the Behringer FCB1010 looks interesting (the possibility of using a footswitch for the +/- switch is a big selling point), but to be completely honest, I have no idea what to look for in a midi controller. I'd like to buy something that will last forever and be able to handle any units I may add to my setup in the future, oh, and price is obviously also a factor, the wife is not exactly impressed with my purchase...
Congrats on the Herbert!!
I have the columbus, really works well with the Diezels, also use it for a G-Major unit. Had a MidiMate, sold it and wouldn't look back. The columbus, like all Diezel products, is built like a tank too.
The Behringer FCB1010 is what? Like a 100$? Can't go wrong with it for a midi pedal. It's very popular because of it's extensive functionality, relay switches and expression pedals. It's my first choice as well.
To switch the +/- function on the herbert, you would need to perform a little (reversible) modification on the herbert which is described here: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=85721 (also check the link in the third post)
Also, the Behringer FCB1010 can't be provided with phantom power from the Herbert because the pedal uses a 5pin midi cable and the Herbert a 7 pin. So originally you'd have to use a seperate power supply to operate the midi pedal. Alternatively you can mod the FCB1010 to receive phantom power. There are a couple of options: http://www.voes.be/fcb1010/index.htm
The above website has it all to make the best out of your fcb1010 .
Congrats on the Herbert purchase! The midi programming on Diezel amps make programming pretty much any midi pedal a breeze, the biggest thing you should consider now is what your needs are. If you think you're just primarily trying to do channel switching then you shouldn't need anything too fancy. For this purpose I just picked up a Peak FCB4 ($150), had it programmed in about 30 seconds and it does exactly what I need it to do and more if I choose to add in anything else with it.
But in the event I want to use a more complicated setup, I have a Liquid Foot Pro switcher. I use this if I'm teaming the Herbert up with an effects processor such as the Axe FX to be able to have more switching options, turning on/off individual effects etc.
There are so many options out there it's really just a matter of finding what going to fit your needs without breaking the bank
