I'm a fan of Amplitube 3, and have been thinking about iRig for iPhone. So now that it's been out for awhile, whats the verdict? I mostly need a high gain sim, with minimal effects. The iRig adapter costs about 40 bucks, so should I put an additional 20 into the full Amplitube application, or would Amplitube Free be sufficient? Also, by what method could I connect the iRig to an interface or effects loop return? I assume some sort of 1/8" stereo to dual 1/4" mono TRS adapter would be fine for an interface, but why about to a mini effects loop return? I'm probably going to order the adapter this weekend, but want to be thinking about possibilities before I plunge in.

personally i prefer the ampkit app for the high gain stuff. it is in partnership with peavey and it just sounds better in my opinion than the amplitube stuff for the iphone

iRig (both the hardware and software) sucks. Get the Apogee JAM, which is actually designed properly to go through the dock connector, and AmpKit+. You won't be sorry. Better high gain tones, better everything tone.

The 100 dollar pricetage puts me off.

Ampkit is better..what i use..i did dl the free amplitube and fender apps tho

Hey Space Cat! ;)

I just picked this thing up today on a whim and have only picked up the free ampkit, and just recently this fender free app, but I haven't checked the fender one out yet. Because I didn't do a lot of research I was a little surprised that it only comes with 3 effects, after you register to get the distortion, the delay and noise suppressor are included in the original no bs 39.99... ... Dingle Berry at the store even told me, "nah you just goto the app store dl the free ampkit and it has everything you just gotta put up with some ads", riiiiight...

Anywho, performance wise(with what you get for the original 39.99)it isn't so bad. I'm kicking around here at quarter to midnight pounding on strings into headphones with nothing but a cord my screen and this thing the size of a AA battery. The distortion idle's pretty loud but when you find the sweet spot between that and the suppressor you can get it pretty tight until you want to shut the suppressor down and have loud open hairy iphone tonez   The delay is nothin to tell momma bout but she works and I'm still pretty stoked on this ultra mini rig. Being as I'm using this on the iphone 4 the screen size is definitely an issue. I can have fun with this thing for sure but switching effects, turning them on and off, as well as amps/cabs/mics etc, a bit of a chore. Ipad would be a lot smoother for this.

I can't speak on the Apogee biz because I did the same thing, they were right next to each other and all I was thinkin was 40... 100... 40... thanks cya

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR ME...The sound was considerably more pleasing when I jacked my bose headphones!

haha, I read a couple of these posts and I'm not sure I would spread the 40, but I'm glad I did it's good cheap quiet kicks and at times those are the shit  As far as going another 20 in and getting everything, we'll see, I could see it if I had the ipad and could work it a lot easier, on the iphone though with the fender kit as well I'm sure it'll get it's moneys worth

STAY AWAY FROM THE IRIG. That's all I can say...especially if you like high gain. All you will get is noise and feedback. I reviewed the irig, ampkit link and apogee jam on my rocker dad site (link below) if you want to read it.

Apogee Jam + ampkit = best solution.

apogee jam and amp kit+ are the shit!
dont waste your time with anything that plugs into the headphone jack on your iphone or ipad IMHO

The 100 dollar pricetage puts me off.

Really? How much was your amp? How much was your guitar?

$100 for an American made product that works properly (unlike the headphone jack garbage), plus $20 for the app is NOT a lot to spend on something with this capability.

I guess I'm old. I remember spending $500 on a shitty Zoom device that doesn't do anywhere near as much as this, when I was a kid.

i have the peavey one and a bunch of backing tracks i recorded so i can practice my leads too

I'm not expecting the same performance from an iPhone app. I want something to goof around on the couch and maybe play around with it's other capabilties. 120 bucks is a lot for something only for practice and novelty purposes. I need to find some good comparisons and reviews first.

I use this.

I understand where you're coming from. I'm just saying it's really night and day difference between the Jam and the iRig in terms of sound quality, and the extra money goes towards an American company making it in America, which to me is worth a lot too.

So, with either the Jam or iRig, how can they be used with an interface (003/PT9), powered monitors, and in a guitar rig?

Again, I would stay away from the irig...seriously. Either way, you're going to be feeding your pa or guitar rig/monitor out of the headphone jack on the ipad/iphone....you just need a 1/4" adapter.

The output in the iRig/Jam is stereo since it's meant for headphones. Do you mean to adapt to a 1/4" stereo plug? It should be mono for a guide rig or interface, and typical monitor applications. I would think a 1/8th to dual mono 1/4th plugs would be needed, but then I'm not sure how that could be used in a guitar rig.

With over 300,000 sold the numbers and customers say differently. iRig is THE most popular interface for Guitar/Bass players on iOS.

People aren't able to test or try out any apps so those numbers are skewed a little. The iRig has great marketing, therefore more people know about it. As far as a side by side comparison...there was no contest to my ears...Ampkit. I won't even get into the noise making interface.

The free version can be used to test the AmpliTube apps (including the desktop which brings me to the next point...). We've also got more than a decade of high-end modeling technology on the competition there. Peavey didn't code any of that one, so there's no Revalver experience brought to that table. On our side, there is code directly derived from AmpliTube 3 that we've been able to use. So there's always that, when we're talking quality sound. Fact is that we do certainly have quite a bit more experience modeling guitar gear, and it does feel great to be celebrating our 15th anniversary. We'll keep coding iOS audio apps, and leave the medical manuals and flash cards to the competition.
